BANGKOK: -- The farmer association is wary of ongoing fall of rice prices next week when new rice harvest is entering the market after the harvest season.

Prasit Boonchoei, president of the Farmers and Thai Rice Association, said beginning next week, white rice is going to enter the market in huge volume after the harvest season.

Although the current price of 8,000-9,000 baht per ton is acceptable by farmers, there is no guarantee that the rice prices will fall after the new harvest enter the market.

He expressed quite satisfactory in the government’s measures to assist farmers but was wary of the price when more supply will be in the market next week.

He said some rice crops in the new harvest might have high moisture due to rains and floods, and this could suppress the price particularly when more supply is entering the market.

He said although the government would issue measures to help farmers, but it covers only jasmine rice.

Perhaps the beginning of the end when the rest of the paddy rice hit the market and the junta government has to find a solutions besides Hom Mali pledge to pacify the angry farmers. The junta politized the rice scheme and blamed politicians for populist policies and now all these are backfiring on them. Sweet karma.

So currently there is no rice pricing issue for rice farmers?

Then maybe the Cabinet should cancel its recent 19.5 billion baht loan and subsidy programs intended to help Thai farmers cope with the rice price drop in the current planting season.
