Clinton offers “to work” with Trump in first statement since defeat

NEW YORK: -- Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has made her first statement since her crushing defeat in the US election.

“I congratulated Donald Trump and offered to work with him on behalf of the country,” she told supporters in New York.

“I hope that he will be a successful president for all Americans.

“We have seen that our country is more deeply divided than we thought but I still believe in Americans and I always will.

“And if you do, then we must accept this result and then look to the future.

“Donald Trump is going to be our president. We owe him an open mind and a chance to lead.”

Clinton also spoke about gender equality, sending out a message to those who had hoped that she would become the first female US President.

“To all the women, especially the young women who put their faith in this campaign and in me: I wan’t you to know that nothing has made me prouder than to be your champion.

“We have still not shattered that highest and hardest glass ceiling, but someday someone will and hopefully sooner than we might think right now.”

A tweet was the last thing the public heard from Hillary Clinton on election night, as the keys to the White House disappeared from reach.

This team has so much to be proud of. Whatever happens tonight, thank you for everything.

Her devastated supporters waited for an appearance at campaign headquarters when the final results came through, but instead it was her campaign chairman who fronted up.

John Podesta told the crowd: “Everybody should head home, you should get some sleep, we’ll have more to say tomorrow.

“I want you to know, I want every person in this hall to know and I want every person across the country who supported Hillary to know that your voices and your enthusiasm means so much to her and to Tim (Kaine) and to all of us.

“We are so proud of you. And we are so proud of her.”

The mood among Clinton supporters at New York's Javits Center on election night was far from joyous. http://abcn.ws/2feIMyb  #Election2016

It had been reported that Clinton had earlier prepared a victory speech but also a speech in case of defeat.

But there are conflicting reports about why Clinton did not make an election-night address, as many had expected.

John Podesta spoke just before Clinton phoned Trump to concede defeat.

Democrats and anti-Trump protesters took to the streets in many centres to protest against the Republican’s victory

Kudos to Hillary for being a gracious loser and staying classy.

Not blaming phantom scapegoats.

I wish her a speedy recovery.

How can she "work with" Trump from jail ?

It's mostly dippy college students.

If I was Trump I would give her a job as minister for Thai rice purchasing.

So more lies from Crooked Hillary...a day ago he's the most unqualified person ever to run for the presidency and not to be trusted with the nuclear codes...and today she's fine with his winning and is willing to work with him during the transition . Untrustworthy and phony to the end.

I'll politely disagree.  I thought it was a pretty compelling speech, gracious in defeat....better than anything she provided during the actual election campaign.  (And I did not want her to be elected so this isn't me thumping the HIllary drum.)

She has lots of experience....but it's the wrong kind

So the speech was nice but everything she said during the campaign was a lie? I think that tells us all we need to know Madam Clinton and why she lost the election.

That happens in almost every election, though.  One of the hallmarks of American politics is the peaceful transition of power from one party to the next.  The country in which we currently reside could learn something from that, don't you think?

Yes, and President Elect Trump was most gracious in his comments on winning the election, going so far to praise Madam Clinton for her service to the country.

Absolutely.  He is not getting nearly enough credit in the press for his remarks early in the morning after she conceded by phone (not surprisingly.)

Online...with a private server?

Work with him ?  Time for her retirement. It's over...her public life is over. Retire to the NY estate and learn to crochet.

THIS.  ^^^^  Her political career - other than providing sound bites for CNN - is over.  Time to enjoy being a grandmother.

I wonder if she's even considered retirement or is it only four more years to wait for another chance ?

Big difference between not being a quitter and actually being a realist.

Nothing will change. Trump will actually be worth 10 billion in four years.lobbyists may have to pay a bit more. Fox in charge of the hen house.

Not likely she'll have "another chance".  In modern American politics, once you've lost the Presidential election, you little have a chance of being nominated again.

But this is Hiliary we're talking about.

Let's hope she gets it.

Yes, as Secretary of State...and more would die overseas...

Hope she gets locked up.

Goodbye then Hillie and Billie - don't hang around for a $650k speaking gig with Goldman - U are of no further use to them

What was the turnout? Too lazy to Google. Did apathy win the day?

His speech hit the right tone.  At the time he made his speech, Dow stock futures were down 700 points.  Upon opening this morning, stocks were up, and finished at a new high.  This, after all the pundits were predicting a market meltdown if Trump won.  Even the Asian markets, down big last session, appear to be recovering today.

Czar is in vogue as a title in America these days.  I hope she gets no post that allows her to sell favors.

Suppose in 4 years time if you wish to defeat Trump you will need a Kardashian to run.

With her health and this is not a conspiracy she will be lucky to carry on living within a few years.

"Not a conspiracy?" Trump life.
