BANGKOK — This year hasn’t been kind to the brand of liberal democracy championed by progressives and internationalists.

First came the election of populist strongman Rodrigo Duterte as president of the Philippines, which led to mass extrajudicial killings that enraged civil rights activists. Then came the referendum vote to withdraw the United Kingdom from the European Union, a victory that rode on waves of nationalist and anti-immigrant sentiments.

When one is too open-minded, the brains fall off.

The brains of these countries have fallen off and rotted a few decades ago. Time for suturing and getting new brains...

Donald Trump won the election by connecting with the ordinary people, the working people, the disenfranchised. He promised more employment and a better standard of living. . He took on the establishment, Wall St and the media. And he won.

Thaksin Shinawatra ought  to have tried that..........................................................................Oh............:shock1:.

You don't meet many Thai progressives. Thai culture is quite conservative on face value.

Donald Trump is a numpty. He will try to lead similar to how the PM here does. That makes people here nervous because US doesn't need Thailand.

For a numpty billionaire to have built a real estate and hotel empire like his, he must be a really smart numpty who will surround himself with the finest numpties in the U.S.A.

His hotel and real estate empire is actually owned by the banks, they use his name and he gets a kickback on it. It was either that or foreclose on the whole squalid mess  back in 92.  That was a decision made at his 2nd Bankruptcy, not the first one; (Taj Mahal,) it was his 2nd The Plaza where the banks thought it was better to have his name and take it over. It's how he has done business ever since. Heh All those Trump hotels are NOT owned by him, and or Trump towers like the ones the Canadians are busy protesting at in Vancouver. Theya re owned by Banks, using the Trump name.

I guess portions of the world populace have finally had a gut full of apologist leaders, ruling with their hearts instead of their brains, and are now voting in the opposite direction. A good thing in my opinion. Look what apologist leaders like David Cameron, Francois Holland and Angela Merkel  have done to their countries and respective constituents. The face of democracy is evolving at last.

And in 2 months, he'll be the most powerful man in the world (with a little help from his friends) Heh.

He promised his faithful to cut Obamacare (the Obamanation) immediatly and replace it with something 'so gooood sooo great' that he never got around to saying what the heck it was and what he would do with the 12 to 20 million people who would lose health insurance.

Today he is going to keep some parts of Obamacare  Heh Oh Ya

HooYah!!

We'll see what he does within the tenure of his first quarter...., I know that not much can be expected from anyone.., but his first quarter should give us an idea if he really is a bit of a crank handle or not.

When did he (or Mrs. Clinton for that matter) ever explain the nuts n bolts of anything he proposes. Things certainly are done(or not done) differently in the US.

I wasn't refering to their net worth but corruption . Her connections to wallstreet , big corp's , foreign governments, ....dwarfs little man thaksin.

But if you're talking money : the clinton foundation is worth 2 billion USD.

Of course that is a "charitable" fund , not their property , yeah right , wink , wink.

Only money for dirty deals .

Joseph de Maistre

Every nation gets the government it deserves.

Letter 76, on the topic of Russia's new constitutional laws (27 August 1811); published in Lettres et Opuscules. The English translation has several variations, including "Every country has the government it deserves" and "In a democracy people get the leaders they deserve." The quote is popularly misattributed to better-known commentators such as Alexis de Tocqueville and Abraham Lincoln.

ratcatcher....

Trump is president. most of the things a "POTUS" gets into are much longer than one or two month things... eh?????

and that starts going downhill very quickly... and ****that**** is why he will start backpedaling even before he makes the big speech in January.

that's why he ****already**** has.

he don't get more "powerful".... and he ain't now and won't ever get any where near as "powerful" as you seem to think... it's the folks on the ****other**** end of the phone calls and emails that are your real "POTUS's".... and there's a lot more than one of them.

and don't forget that even with the black box.... there are folks on the other end of ****that**** thing too... with less "power" but in the chain for a very simple reason.
