Thai reaction to Trump’s Asia policy: Cautiously confused
By Suthichai Yoon

BANGKOK: -- Initial reactions among Thai government, bureaucracy and business to the election of Donald Trump as the 45th US president range from an attitude of “wait and see”, to “no short-term impact”.

On closer scrutiny, the general response might be traditionally described as “cautiously optimistic”  – but deep down the real attitude is probably “cautiously confused”. Nobody, after all, knows exactly where the US president-elect stands on Asia, not to mention the Association of Southeast Asian Nations – or Thailand for that matter.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said what was expected of him: The Thai government was ready to work with the new US administration, and considering the more than 180-year relationship between the two countries, any rebalancing on either side shouldn’t have serious negative impacts on ties.

Why don't the government just speak on behalf of Trump and say everything will be great? Deal with any problems as and when you get more information.

Or, are they worried that Trump is a megalomaniac who wouldn't like that?

What confusion?

The new USA will penalized corporates that seek to buy their own shares back instead of using monies to increase industrial productivity.

"and considering the more than 180-year relationship between the two countries,"

They may want to stop saying that, as Trump touts change, not history.  Hilary, according to the networks who got the election all wrong, was about the past.

Let's wait and see!

Confusion is the most logical stance given Trump's track record of turning on a dime... what some hope for: "pragmatic" could also be applied to behavior of psychopaths, and significant percentage greater than average population of CEOs are psychopaths. Enjoy the ride

I suspect a typical response might be:

" We look forward to winning beside  you MR Trump.

In fact, we expect be winning so much, we will be very bored of winning "

I suspect if the cretin ever realises he can get people to work here for around US$10 a day, (and of course less for Burmese)

there will be Trump hotels and resorts everywhere staffed with Burmese.

Lets just hope Thailand sticks to the policy of not letting foreigners "win" off the back off Thais, which of course is a job reserved for the elite.

Relax everybody!  Donald  Trump is still the President Elect.  He  still is trying to  get  his  group

together. Patience  is  necessary.  And  while  you  are  at  it,  give  the  guy a  chance!

Look  at Canada's leader,  as  he  has  been  in a  year  and  is  still  green.  Too bad  our  leader

does not stay  in Canada.  Now he is in Cuba,  travelling around on the taxpayers dollars.

Geezer

Thai Government musing about Trump: He is the "You are Fired" guy... Can he fire us? We are now looking at that and are prudently obfuscated, no, we are carefully befuddled..., nah, we are cautiously confused!

Thailand will be okay, just remember that when Trump visits to have busty Thai ladies greet him; both of them.

I think it would be difficult to find ANYONE, including US citizens, who isn't confused!

If Trump put equal and fair tariffs on goods entering the US, it will sink the economies of all SE Asian countries as China, Japan, and S Korea will be forced to be more self sufficient. Not only will they lose exports to the US but all their trade partners. I hope he does it but would bet my life savings against it. Big business rules the roost not the President.

Remain calm...he hasn't even been sworn it yet!

Don't believe all the nonsense you are hearing and reading.

Just have fun, enjoy the sunshine, blue sky and lovely ladies or fit men.

Life is short.

Don't get old and sick from worry....

The difference is with everybody trying to push the democratically elected leader of Canada out, even he has enough sense to realize he won't please everybody trying to keep the peace.

america has only ever bombed bankok once during the second world war and that was over 60 years ago so we just have to hope it does not happen again but we will have to wait and see.

When dealing with the above the megalomaniac you have to massage their ego and God knows Trump has a big one. I doubt if Thailand will even come up on Trump's radar screen he is really zeroed in on Mexico. The wall must be paid for. Besides the president of Mexico even in his lifts is shorter than Trump and of course again this plays to Trumps ego to pick on the little guy.
