Digital technology complicates copyright issue

BANGKOK: -- The collective whining of Thai youngsters all across the country over the shutting down of a website is not just about teen hysteria. The website was known for offering, for free, Korean TV series in high-quality videos with good Thai subtitles soon after each episode hit the Korean TV screens.

The issue, therefore, involves the long-standing moral and legal aspects of intellectual property-right protection and how things are getting more complicated by the fast-evolving digital technology.

The main reason for the website blackout is fear of heavy copyright penalties, which could be a massive amount of money.

Virtually every Thai teenager charmed by the Korean entertainment industry had been hooked to the website, which seemingly was created out of passion than with the aim to make financial gains.

I don't know the site involved, those shows have no interest for me or my family, but I am sure there was a certain amount of advertising carried that supported the noble efforts of the website creators and translators.

And perhaps it will encourage Thai youth to either learn other languages, or follow programmes in their own language. I would have thought the Koreans were already exploring selling these shows, with subtitles, to Thai broadcasters if they are so popular.

I am bit of a hypocrite as I am not sufficiently skilled to follow any Thai language programme. I will first have to find one I wish to watch, but have not been successful yet. Incessant game shows, noisy soaps and constant interruptions from the General's broadcasts don't really enthuse me.

Well, take the evergreens (persistent repeats) out of the English shows, and we're probably looking at, what, less than a day's worth of entertainment per week from True?

But but what about the digital thrust. Back to the sword I guess.

They want to channel you to watch Fox News out of boredom providing they have Fox News. True has never been my cup of tea. I get the basics on WETV including Fox News for comedy relief. I like the guy with the dumb look on his face that always talks on cue and sits to the left of the screen.

so were young Thai intellectuals watching this Korean soap online while the normal Thai soaps were suspended on the television blackout?
