BANGKOK: -- Two Thai men impersonating immigration officers were arrested yesterday in the Kannayao area of northern Bangkok.

Their modus operandi was to find foreign victims then phone their relatives to extort money for their release, reports Thairath.

But they got caught in a sting set up by local police after a man suspected he was being fleeced.

Arrested were Asawin (or At) Bualuang, 30, of Bang Khen, Bangkok and Teera (or Ton) Upphong, 30 a native of Sakon Nakorn.

Earlier Somchai Mahaderrai, 22, had reported that he was the subject of an extortion request and had been asked to pay 3,500.

Cops laid in wait at the end of Soi Khu Born in Ram Intra and made the arrest of the two suspects who admitted everything.

Their urine also tested positive for the use of amphetamines.

Police asked anyone who may have fallen victim to the two men to contact officers at Kannayao police station.

Pretty hard for potential victims to identify these two men from that sharp photo...

They may well be promoted to actual immigration officers. They're showing promise.

No problem. I've seen a Thai with a badge like that

Somchai Mahaderrai does not sound like a foreign victim does he ?

They were thinking very small,3,500 THB ,the other day

some army men raided a nearby market (on a tip off it

was said)a arrested a Tai Yai man ,who had papers, but

was working out of the area he was supposed to be,

maybe 5 Km's away, and they wanted 50,000  Thb

for his release, bargained down to 20K. luckily his

wife and child who was with him managed to get away.

Does the victim have to look like a white tourist  ?  He could be from Burma or Laos.

What I am sure is that victims always look like victims and it will never be me...

More crime to come as the tourists are down by thousands. Never seen it this quiet in 6 years living here.

Like when I did land in swampy some guy was looking at my luggage  while i did pass the immigration counter and retrieved my luggage I did not know who they were since they looked like weirdos and wearing civilian clothes.

Did not stop and ask so I did carry on to my ride to hotel.
