I entered 30th September on 30 day visa exempt. Got 30 day extension at Phuket immigration. I want to stay longer as I want to spend my Birthday/ Christmas here. Which is my better option: Penang or Ranong? Is it better to go with an visa run agency or diy by driving or public transportation? Please recommend agencies and requirements/possible documents needed if possible. Thanks in advance!

Given that border, I would go to Penang and get a Tourist Visa there.  If you only have one Visa Exempt, and have not been here before (or not in the last year +), you could also try to re-enter on a Visa Exempt.  Best to use Pedang Besar to return in either case (not Sadao).  If refused re-entry on the Visa Exempt, Penang for a Tourist Visa would be your next step.  Ranong has been touchy on re-entries lately, usually solved with a "fee" of some sort.

Hello OP, I have been to Penang several times. The first time I did it solo and upon re-entry the IO denied me saying I did not have proof of finances (my fault entirely). After panicking for a few minutes and talking to my bus driver, I was able to obtain entry - he had to talk to a few IO's. After that incident, I booked all my trips to Penang with chartered buses and drivers who knew the IO's very well. Those experiences? Amazing! Almost pleasurable (barring the one time I was in a minibus with 9 Russian men in their mid-twenties learning Muay Thai and always wanting to act tough - that was a different experience).

My recommendation - use a chartered service. It should cost 4000-5000 baht, takes just under 48 hours, and you have the comfort of knowing the driver has a relationship with the IO. Be respectful to everyone, be clean, and observe the rules and you should be fine. Be wary of Russians this time of year who think it's okay to act tough in the line at immigration - stay far, far away and do not associate.

Also, Penang > Ranong. I've never done Ranong, but when you go through Penang there just seems to be an almost factory-floor like flow to the process.

Thank you @Jack Thompson. Any info on direct public transportation from Phuket to Penang?

I have not traveled there from Phuket.  I have used the bus and train to go through Pedang Besar.   If I were to do it again, I would definitely return by train.  From Phuket, that may not make sense, so others living there can probably provide better ideas.

My choice would be to fly. Firefly has several flights a week. Unfortunately, you are applying at rather short notice which means a higher price. I can recommend the Chulia Mansion hotel. On arrival, ask them to have their preferred agent come by to pick up your passport and arrange the visa on your behalf. Easy and reliable.

@Dannie88 I believe they were called A B Visa Run. I obtained them through the owner of a restaurant in Chalong, Phuket - the place is called Tony's. It's basically two shady-looking-at-first-but-are-really-nice drivers who take good care of you. The one with the longer hair went as far as to fill out all our applications for us while we are at one of our pitstops. I can't recommend them enough - good luck! When you are in Penang, make sure to check out Little India and eat as much of their vegetarian cuisine as humanly possible. It makes the trips totally worth it.

I noticed you mentioned Philippines. The Thai embassy in Makarti, Manila takes 2 working days to issue a tourist visa. Leave before 12noon on day 1 pickup after 3pm on day 3, not a very quick service.

But you can sure have a lot of fun in MNL. Plus most people in the Thai Embassy area are English speaking
