BANGKOK: -- Police yesterday arrested a 27-year-old Bangkokian who allegedly claimed to be MR Mannarumas Yukol and sought money in exchange for giving others a chance to attend the Abhidhamma prayer for His Majesty King Bhumibold Adulyadej at the Grand Palace on Tuesday night.

At the police press conference yesterday, Charan Sanitwong resident Anothayapat Sitthirapol admitted that she signed in as MR Mannarumas so she could lead others into the Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall. She admitted to having done this three times – on October 27, November 22 and November 23 – and duped 17 people into giving her over Bt100,000 before being arrested.

It is one thing pretending to have such status, but you have to seriously question the people who believe it ?

Looking at that photo I reckon she'd be better at pretending to be a bloke

Possibly the brainwashing from birth has something to do with it ?

Sorry?  Does that mean that those holding honorific titles have more sway to get into the Throne Hall than the common herd?

Status, real or presumed is everything.

There's special arrangements for civil servants too.

This country is washed with impersonators of all kinds, fake army and cops

government officials and even fake beggars, so faking a royal

status is only one of the possibilities....

Illegally claiming royal title and then using it to get special privilege and financial benefit, with regard to an event that is a matter of national sorrow is going over the line a bit!

What was she thinking? ??

27 years old. She might be out at 50 years old. If she's lucky.

What a waste of a human life.

i guess they simply trusted her without doing any checks and probably assumed nobody would dare to come up with such a ruse especially since the deed was committed in the royal grounds itself. Also the royal family like the majority of such families worldwide has so many minor royals like distant cousins, uncles, aunts etc and all the king's children with the exception of one has married and remarried meaning they have numerous kids making a normal thai unsure of every single royal person out there.

Here's a good place to start. Digging deeper requires time and patience. It is a large family.

Back in "good old blighty" there are many ladies who consider themselves to be royalty

If they only would try to enforce every law with the same intensity...oh well...

What a waste of a human life.

Recently, Thailand’s Military Court sentenced a Thai con-woman to 150 years in jail after defaming the royal family by promising favors from them to people in exchange for cash.

most of the victims were her own friends

Apparently not good enough friends to know she wasn't royalty.

Maybe it is

A number of my friends are dedicated queens

Its hard to figure out if she had a  mental problem or was just plain crafty. 100,000 from 17 people is pretty crafty. Why are people so easily scammed here. I keep watching them at the Lottery ticket booths and scratch my head. Some really get serious about this selection process they make it look like they are buying a new car. Money better spent on a few cold ones.

If I remember correctly a Mom Ratchawong is the great-grandchild of a king, so that would be (I guess) Rama V.  A couple of quick google searches doesn't tell me how many wives or children King Chulalongkorn had, but he appointed twelve of his sons as government ministers, so my guess is that there are quite a lot of M.R.s The current governor of Bangkok is one. Probably most of them are not very wealthy, but I would think most of them would be active in "society." Lots of prestige but no wealth. It seems it is not difficult to persuade people you have that status. My guess would be that it is not recorded on your ID card. Gee, this brings up all sorts of questions about Thai culture that I will probably never get answered.
