The final board in the ninth round of the World Senior Scrabble Championships. In this game Tony Sim of Singapore defeated Gerry Carter of Thailand 534 - 356.

BANGKOK: -- Singapore Scrabble master Tony Sim, a retired aircraft engineer, moved into top spot at the World Senior Scrabble championships at Central Bang Na yesterday.

With four games to go on Friday Tony leads Bangkok veteran Gerry Carter, playing for Thailand, on point spread with both Scrabblers having won twelve games. In third on eleven wins is David Webb of the UK.

Fourteen players over the age of 55 are competing in the event for the top prize expected to be $1,000 US.

Gerry's lead evaporated before lunch on the second day as he misspelled a word - JINKGOES which is unacceptable. Though he did play it the correct way next turn - JINGKOES. But the missed turn proved disastrous.

The seniors championship will conclude after lunch and be followed by the annual Princess Cup when world number one Nigel Richards will be at the shopping centre along with former world champion Panupol Sajjayakorn of Thailand who won the Princess Cup last year.

Spectators are welcome at the weekend when upwards of 5,000 Thai schoolchildren will take part in student divisions of English Scrabble, equations game A-Math and Thai language Scrabble, or Kham Khom.

In the international youth section Jeremy Khoo of Singapore will be attempting to defend the title he won last year.

Gerry Carter who has played Scrabble, known as Crossword Game in Thailand, for 25 years said that the game enjoys enormous popularity in Thailand with Bangkok being known around the world as the "Home of Scrabble" due to the large number of high profile tournaments and top players in the capital.

The game receives recognition from the Thai Royal family and at the national championships in July tourism and sports minister Kobkarn Wattanararangul handed out the top prize of $10,000 US to winner Nigel from New Zealand.

"Scrabble is one of the gat success stories of Thailand with tens of thousands of Thai children playing the game", said Gerry. "It helps with their language acquisition but also with maths and strategic and tactical awareness. It is also a lot of fun!"

“Thailand in second as World Senior Scrabble Championships near conclusion

From the way the headline reads, one would think that it is about a native born Thai.  I wish Thailand would act the same in granting us reasonable visas, as they do by suddenly adopting a westerner as one of their own when it makes the country look good in international eyes.

I'm guessing Gerry did not write that.

Another hub?

Look at some of the words though: qi, ab, lo, gu, pe. They may appear in the dictionary, but it's just taking the piss. Scrabble should be three letters and up.

And what does "Jingkoes" mean?

Oxford dictionary doesn't have it, nor does the Merriam-Webster version.

I can find a whole bunch of sites that tell me  its a valid scrabble word but not one of them have a definition for it.

Wow. First reply and the Thai bashing starts....I wonder does your country hand out visas to everyone? Like the UK where anyone with less than a substantial salary or savings can't bring their wife to live in the UK with them... You see its not just Thailand that has unjust visa rules that separate families...

And ornamental tree.

If those are the best words they can come up with in a Scrabble game, then I will be sure to apply for participation in the next tournament.

Yes, I saw that, but the dictionary says that's spelt with a "G" not a "J"
