Gunman bursts into French monks' residence, kills woman

By PHILIPPE SOTTO

PARIS (AP) — The French gendarmerie says a masked gunman has burst into a retirement home for monks in southern France and killed an elderly woman with a knife.

The press service for the national military police couldn't immediately say whether the incident is linked to a terror act or not.

A press official said early Friday that more than 100 members of the security forces have been dispatched on the scene in the village of Montferrier-sur-Lez, near the southern town of Montpellier.

The body of the deceased woman was found gagged and tied up outside the building, the official said.

The security forces searched the four floors of the residence but did not find the assailant. Research was continuing in other parts. The official said 59 monks are out of danger.

Manhunt in France after killing at religious residence

By PHILIPPE SOTTO

PARIS (AP) — French police searched Friday for a masked gunman suspected of stabbing an elderly woman to death in a retirement home for Catholic missionaries in southern France, authorities said.

An unusually large police operation was launched to search for the suspected attacker, believed to be armed with a shotgun and a knife. The identity of the assailant and motive for the killing were unclear.

The press service for the gendarmes, or military police, couldn't say whether the incident was linked to a terrorist act. Security at religious and other sites has been increased after a string of Islamic extremist attacks on France.

A gendarme service spokesman said early Friday that more than 100 members of the security forces were dispatched to the village of Montferrier-sur-Lez, near the city of Montpellier in the southern tip of France. The spokesman was not authorized to be publicly named.

Prosecutor Christophe Barret told reporters that a woman who works at the retirement home called police Thursday night to say she had been attacked.

When the officers arrived, they found the body of another woman, gagged and tied up outside the building with three stab wounds, the gendarme spokesman said.

The worker who alerted police did not suffer serious injuries but was deeply rattled, and no one else at the residence was harmed, the prosecutor said in televised remarks carried on the website of Midi Libre newspaper.

Security forces searched the complex but did not find the assailant. The spokesman said the about 60 residents of the facility are out of danger, and the search is continuing in a larger perimeter with help from a helicopter and police dogs.

The residence, called "Green Oaks," is operated by the African Missions Society, and takes in retired priests, nuns and others who have worked on missions in Africa.

Olivier Ribadeau Dumas, spokesman for the French Catholic bishops' conference, tweeted condolences for the woman killed and added, "our prayers reach out also to the missionaries attacked in their retirement home in the Herault (region). God give them all peace."

France has been under a state of emergency for a year since Islamic State group attacks on Paris killed 130 people. Another Islamic State attack in July targeted a Catholic church in Normandy, where two attackers slit a priest's throat and held elderly parishioners hostage.

Whats the likelihood...98% I'd guess...score another one for the Islamists and their Socialist enablers. Happily, Marie probably goes up another 5 points from this attack.

A manhunt was on Friday in southern France for a masked intruder — identified as a former member of the French military  The suspect was identified with the help of an air gun and other elements he would not detail in a car near the residence. A gendarmerie official close to the investigation said military decorations were among the elements found in the car and that the vehicle was traced to a former member of the military.

Assume as you wish, but at this stage French police do not believe it was an Islamist attack.

As to Marie le Pen I assume you have not read her ridiculous manifesto.

Socialist enablers? Seriously?  Who sold the terror state of iran weapons? Ronald Reagan's  right wing government did, that's who. Reagan and his crew broke the arms embargo on Iran. Who sells the most arms  to North Africa, and the Arab states? Why it has been good old nations of the USA, France, UK, Sweden, Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland and Germany.

Saudi Arabia  and Qatar have been implicated in worldwide terror for decades and yet the USA has been selling them weapons during that time.  Spare us the  vapid hypocrisy.

The socialists are the arch enemies of  the Islamic terror movement because  socialists do not accept a doctrine that the state and its religion are one, or that minorities do not have rights. Socialists do not support sharia law that  has children beheaded and rape victims blamed.  Socialists support women's human rights, and do not toss gay kids off buildings etc.  If we are saved from the excesses of religious nutters it will because of liberal ideals and liberal blood that will be spilled in defense of freedom.

Yes I know, but I'm not one to immediately speculate a suspect is an Islamist; seems to me some people on this forum actually want an attacker to be an Islamist in order to feed their agendas. Their was a french Algerian guy in Oz a few months back who murdered two people, everyone rabbiting on definitely an Islamist - he has been certified as a schizophrenic and will not be charged under terrorism legislation..

Suspect now arrested, will have to wait & see if in fact the guy is an Islamist.

Remember Timothy Mcveigh? He was a decorated veteran and "patriotic American. He also murdered 168 in his terror bombing.

Steve bannon's faux news website Breitbart has been a recruiting  source for extremist right wing nationist groups in the USA. He regularly ran false reports that supported the agenda of white nationalists. Today he is the  right hand man of Putin supporter Donal Trump.

That's fine if you don't like to speculate on events...as for me, I'm just giving an opinion on the likely identity and motive of the attacker. Of course I could be wrong...but I bet 90% of people wouldn't take the other side of my bet.
