Interior Ministry orders all provinces to expedite survey on places used to store rice nationwide

 

BANGKOK, 28 November 2016 (NNT) - The Interior Ministry has ordered all provinces to survey locations that can be used to store rice to formulate a systemic assistance and rice management strategy. 

Interior Ministry Permanent Secretary Krissada Boonyarat disclosed that he had urgently notified all provincial governors to instruct relevant authorities to survey all rice silos and rice banks under each agency's responsibility, and report the locations and capacity back to the Ministry of the Interior within December 1st. 

Relevant authorities were also instructed to survey rice silos owned by farmers in each district and report to the Ministry of the Interior within December 15. 

The survey information will be used to prepare a database to determine measures to help farmers in the future.

This season's rice harvest has been under way for over a month. Should this not have been done some time ago?

Presumably this is to avoid repeats of the embarrassment of earlier rice auctions when successful bidders later found their rice purchases were not to specification or rotten/rat infested or worse still, could not even be found.

Shouldn't this have been done before he recommended to store all of the rice?  Or, way before that?  Amazing

Shouldn't this have already begun?

Recently the government started paying rice farmers 1,500 baht per ton of unmilled Pathum Thani fragrant and paddy rice as a storage subsidy.
