Navy takes delivery of six patrol boats

 

 

BANGKOK: -- The Royal Thai Navy yesterday took delivery of six new patrol boats to guard the country's coastlines in the Gulf of Thailand and in the Andaman Sea and to provide security for the royal family.

 

All the six patrol boats built by Marsun ship builder were received by Navy commander Admiral Na Areenich at the ceremony held at the Sattahip Naval Base’s Laem Thien Pier.

 

The boats were then  handed over to commander of the Royal Thai Fleet Admiral Sucheep Wangmaitree and later to the Coast Guard Squadron commander Rear Admiral Banchob Phodaeng.

That's a better investment than submarines!!!

Well the Thai Navy's procurement team seem to be doing better than the British.

Think you'll find that's been cancelled cause the jetty in Pattaya is past it's sell by date

Probably good for towing out pesky refugees into international waters

And the armaments carried are? Hopefully useful.

 

I mean it would not be good form to have some coastal pirates take one over would it.

They plan to use a sub for that

the other plan sunk to the bottom of the gulf 

Maybe they can patrol the artisan fishermen and fine for throwing trash overboard.   

They look fine to me & yes they do do border runs up the coast where there are pirates so hopefully these new boats might discourage a few.

If the Thai military did their homework there's nine personal carries impounded in H.K. by China that belongs to Singapore, and the reason, they brought them from Taiwan, could be a cheap buy here General see your mates.........................................

You are wrong..as of yesterday the authorities decided it was fine and an initial "test" run of the service is  being done on the 5th December

Made of aluminium wasnt that the problem with the Sheffield and Coventry? Burned like anything. Hope they never get hit with magnesium ammo

Good investment for RTN,  who really only need surveillance and maritime law enforcement close in along their coastline.

 

Any deep water battles can be slugged out by the big boys with their hi-tech navies.

 

These patrol boats will be heaps more useful, practical and affordable than the proposed submarines purchase, and keeping the worlds smallest aircraft carrier, that has no planes, no modern defence systems and no budget to operate it. (What was the RTN thinking when they bought that ?)

 

Also, cudos should go to RTN for having their patrol boats built by Marsun, a local Thai shipbuilder near BKK. Good to see Thai Govt supporting local industry.

Last on I saw only had a couple of fishing rods for the captains use, the crew used lines attached to the guns...

Do not think they are worried, when was the last time Thailand saw conflict with a real aggressor other than a skirmish or two with Cambodia and a few hit and run terrorists in the south.

20mm auto cannon on the front and .50 on the back by the look of it. Not sure what they mean by an 81mm grenade launcher, that's a huge calibre. Maybe it a form of flare system (still big) lost in translation. Most grenade launchers for something like that boat would be 40mm.

Not a problem, a design choice.

 

This is one of the latest American warship designs:

"The lightweight aluminum construction of the Independence-class ships makes them more vulnerable to damage than the Freedom-class ships.(edit: which have Steel Hull/Aluminium Superstructure)"

 

It has been common practice since pre-Falklands to use aluminium rather than steel.  The theory (then and now) being that sophisticated surveillance/targeting/weapons systems will detect and destroy threats before they do damage:  "Active" Defence.  The weight/amount of armour a ship would need to carry to achieve "all-round" defence against modern attack weapons makes its use impractical.  

 

It didn't work for those two ships:

"The four Skyhawks flew so low that Coventry's targeting radar could not distinguish between them and the land and failed to lock on".

 

"Sheffield picked up the incoming missiles on her type 965 radar (an interim fitting until the Type 1022 set was available); the operations officer informed the missile director, who queried the contacts in the ADAWS 4 fire control system.[11] Critically, the Sheffield did not have an ECM jammer fitted[12] and lacked other critical ECM equipment, and failed to go to action stations or a heightened state of readiness, or to do anything to prepare weapons or the decoy system. The launch aircraft had not been detected as the British had expected, and it was not until smoke was sighted that the target was confirmed as sea skimming missiles. Five seconds later, an Exocet hit Sheffield amidships, approximately 8 feet (2.4 m) above the waterline on deck 2, tearing a gash in the hull.[11] The other missile splashed into the sea a half mile off her port beam.[13]"

 

Defense has to be matched to severity of threat, which is determined by mission type. The RTN is not (hopefully) intending to use their new vessels as "Line of Battle" ships and and they are only likely to encounter low intensity, small arms fire (if any) in their designed role.  Their ability to do greater damage (from beyond the range of such weapons) is what makes that eventuality less likely.

From the river it's easy to shoot a rocket inside the hospital.
