Change from retirement extension to marriage extension

Featured Replies

I am considering an offer of a full time job, with a work permit. Currently I have a retirement extension based on income letter from the British Embassy.

If I accept the job offer I must change to a marriage visa to be able to apply for a work permit.

Can I simply transfer to a new marriage extension (my current retirement extension expires Sept 2017), or do I need another letter from the embassy for my income and apply for a new extension.

Any advice welcome,

thanks.

Immigration normally will not change the reason for the extension until the current extension is close to ending.

You may have to leave the country without having a re-entry permit and get a new non-o visa based upon marriage and apply for a new extension. You could still use your pension income to apply for the extension and still be able to get a work permit and work but it would be wise to show less than 65k baht income on the income letter.

Would you mind to give an idea why it would be wise to show less than 65k?

Because the could insist on doing an extension based upon retirement.

People have ended up with one without wanting one because they showed enough income or money in the bank for retirement.

Ok, thanks for the answers. Wouldn't have thought of that.

As you are married the labour office might issue a WP even though your permit to stay is based on being over 50 (retirement). It's certainly worth asking. If they do, you can change the reason for your extension to marriage when the time comes to renew your permission to stay.

Elviajero, do you know of cases where this has happened?

I have dealt with the Department of Labour for years, but have no personal experience of this happening.

I made the suggestion because I know the decision is down the the Labour Office and not Immigration, because I've read reports form TV members claiming that they have had work permits issued with permission to stay based on retirement, and because the OP has the important Non-Immigrant Visa entry and is married.

IMO the reason for the extension of stay is irrelevant because the OP is married.
