BANGKOK: -- Retail business expects a 20-30% sales increase from the government's launch of several packages aimed at boosting public spendings in the New Year season.

But one of the state’s notable think tanks says the packages will not have a significant impact on the economic growth of the country.

Central Pattana Pcl’s vice president for marketing Nattakrit Tangpoonsinthana, said that the government’s ‘Shop to Help the Country’ campaign which serves as a New Year gifts to the public will help to increase consumer spendings in the remain month of this year.

The campaign was similar to the one that was launched late last year, he said and expects the company’s sales to increase by 20-30 %.

He said as a whole, business would improve, but under the present atmosphere that the government has wisely allowed tax exemptions for purchases during the campaign.

Not taking into account the contributions from the tourism sector, this will greatly help increase consumer spending such as it did in the previous year, he said.

He also said as it is the national mourning period for His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the New Year’s  countdown celebrations which are normally organized in a big way at the plaza in front of the  Central World shopping center would be toned down.

But decoration of 10 million light bulbs and a commemorative ceremony for His Majesty have been planned instead of the previous years’ pomp and revelry which accompanies every Central New Year celebrations, he said.

For most Thais, the sparkle from this so-called "gift to the public" is sure to set their New Year off with a really big bang !!!

I'm just sat here at my wife's mums restaurant in samut  prakan on a usually busy high st.  It's been dead since near two months ago, some shops not even bothering to open.  Everyone complaining about terrible business ect. Obviously this isn't tourists area but the Thais seem to be staying in to eat around here. It's quite weird actually as it's usually so hectic and busy here. I have never seen it so quiet.

Im no thai economy expert , just saying how it is on the ground where I am.

Finally saner minds prevail. I guess they have no ax to grind.

That shops looks like Tops, if they want to boost sales the govt could cut the ludicrous amount of tax on wines, 900 baht for a bottle of wine you could get for 6 quid back home puts me off spending.

retail is in sh1t street from small to large outlets, 7/11 still plods along as do best located larger outlets but the reality is grim, people simply not got the money borrowed or earned to spend, tourism retail also hit by low tourism and strong baht which means most tighten belt and start taking note thus realising how expensive it can be when a tourist lol ...

you will get a natural increase due to seasonal reasons but nothing more ...

Turning on 10 million light bulbs should get the economy rolling. How do they dream this rubbish up?

Because tourists from all over asia will come to see the lights and make pictures for their faceboo. Last year there were zillions of lights in teh city, even more than there are roosters upcountry.

But i don't see the led-lights yet, they are late this year.
