Police chief says Dhammachayo will not be granted bail if arrested

 

 

BANGKOK: -- Phra Dhammachayo will not be granted bail if he was arrested because police have given a chance to turn himself in to acknowledge the charges against him, Pol Gen Chakthip Chaichinda, the chief of the Royal Thai Police Office, said today.

 

He is confident that the embattled abbot of Wat Dhammakaya is still somewhere in the temple and has not escaped out of the country. He declined to comment whether the monk is still sick or not.

 

The police chief said that the criminal case against Dhammachayo has dragged on for a long time and he wanted the case to settle once and for all. However, he noted that the case had to be handled with great caution so that it would not impact on Buddhism in general.

 

The national police chief disclosed that seven companies of police had been put on standby to provide support to the Department of Special Investigation in case the department decided to raid the temple in order to make the arrest.

 

He disclosed that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha was concerned with the case after it was the temple had allegedly mobilized its faithful followers to come to the temple to join the mass prayer.

The case has to be handles with great caution so it will not impact Buddhism in general !

Well then it already has an impact and was started by the abbot who has kept it going by running rings around the authorities who in turn are complicit because they can't or won't do their duty so the issue remains a massive joke and remains in the headlines.

Is the ' impact on Buddhism ' angle being lined up as a final determination to allow dropping the whole thing ?

To describe this as ludicrous would be too kind!!!

I thought granting bail is a function of the court, not the police chief. Foot in mouth again. Gaffe like this will irate and fire up the temple followers and build upon their beliefs that the monk has not been treated fairly. Thoughtless by the highest ranking police officer.

I feel they really dont want to arrest him anyway,maybe it would

open a big can of worms,the Abbot knows a lot of secrets,so it 

would seem this is all just a lot of huffing and puffing,and nobody

will ever be arrested.

 

IF they really wanted to arrest him they could at least tried by now,

instead of issuing all these final deadlines,for him to turn himself in.

Will this be concluded in time for the PM to have it in his annual list of achievements ?

Police chief says he hopes Dhammachayo will not be granted bail  if and when he is arrested. More realistic headline.

It is not within the Police Chief's purview to grant or deny bail. Just get the man into custody first.

When did the police chief get the power to grant bail?   Is the  police chief seating on the Supreme Court now?  This is justice in Thailand.

Nobody in authority in Thailand has the balls to arrest Dhammachayo.

He will continue to make fools of them, and he knows it.

The DSI have made a mess of this from the start, now they are in a no win situation.

Would not impact on Buddhism or the General??? Maybe I did not read this right.  I thought the monk made a deal on getting bail?? He took to long and they withdrew the offer??

That will come as a great relief to Dhammachayo, he can see out the rest of this life unmolested in the temple. Business as usual !!

I believe the powers in charge are afraid of bad publicity should they have to send in hundreds of armed police/troops to arrest a monk or get into a physical confrontation with the temple followers.  It would probably be wise to guarantee bail and then let the prosecutors and courts figure the rest out.

Yes, RC.  Police can oppose bail but the decision is not their's.

I can not understand why the police as an executive investigative authority can decide about Bail or not. In many other legal systems, a judge decides on freedom against bail. The danger of abuse, that the police can already decide in the investigation phase on a release, without a prosecutor or judge is heard, is much too large. Usually, the police Investigates, the prosecutor accuses and the judge decides.

IF arrested. That says all there is to say about this ongoing farce.

Make him do 20 push ups, or run around a motorcycle.

Police bail is commonly used and well known as well as court authorised bail.  In this case, though, it is the OAG that makes the decision and it is out of his hands as the RTP Chief commented yesterday.  The Supreme Court doesn't come into it at this stage.

So concerned that he dismissed the use of Article 44 and the military to arrest Dhammakaya.
