PHUKET: Local government officials have confirmed that the B22.4 million Karon Beach erosion protection project has been put on hold until Karon Municipality get the required permit from the Marine Office.

Mr Borpith Chomchiey, a transport specialist at the Phuket Marine Office confirmed to The Phuket News yesterday (Dec 9) that his office filed a complaint against the Sahayotasathapat Co Ltd construction company and Karon Municipality at Karon Police Station yesterday in relation to the project.

“We filed a complaint with police after our investigation revealed that Karon Municipality did not get building permission for any structure that will protrude into the water from the Marine Office.”

The investigation came after the Marine Office was notified on November 23 that the project was being constructed on NorSorLor land explained Mr Borpith.

“On Dec 5 officials from our office went to inspect the area and found a 3,530 metre by 60 centimetre wall being built into the beach. The project was approved by a committee set up by Provincial Hall, however, they failed to propose the project with the Marine Office before construction started so we filed the complaint,” he said.

Erosion protection, beautification, this project project has everything.

I often hear the expression "team work"  but have yet to see it in action, this story being a good example.

Pattaya beach are spending many many millions of Baht right now, and yet Pattaya think they can reclaim a large area utilising stupid, ugly, dirty and deteriorating sand bags, you are lucky in Phuket that they are at least trying to build a real wall!

The usual bungling continuing.....so many stupid people involved in running Thailand!

he's a transport specialist? Wonder what he knows about costal  erosion - jack shit I'm guessing (maybe no envelope his way ) and that wall looks so far from the sea

Except the right permits. Is this another one of those wink wink permits??

Does any major project in this country ever proceed without a hitch?   Perhaps they would prefer that the beach gets washed completely away?    In another story, the Pattaya pier was supposed to be unsafe for the planned Pattaya/Hua Hin ferry, signalling its possible cancellation, but miraculously, we now hear that the plan can go ahead, presumably using the "unsafe" pier, but of course only after various "permits" etc have been obtained.  Sound familiar?

By contrast it doesn't seem to a problem or hitches getting a legislated permit for a gold mine that has legally banned from operating. Gooses of a different shade. One again in Thailand big money speaks.

Don't just talk to the hand,  you dope,  pay the hand!  Don't  you

know  the rules.

Geezer

Sea walls actually cause sand, beach erosion it is natural is for a beach to constantly move inland. Thailand is so far behind in so many ways. The wall will be a long term disaster.

Mayb ejust once they should consult with foreign authorities.. haha, yea.
