Thailand, China agree on research cooperation in support of EEC project

BANGKOK, 14 December 2016 (NNT) – The Thai Ministry of Science and Technology has signed a deal with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) to establish bilateral cooperation in research, with an aim of pushing forward the Eastern Economic Corridor project.

A cooperation agreement was recently signed between Science and Technology Minister Pichet Durongkaveroj and the CAS, which is the largest public research and development institute in China overseeing more than a hundred research agencies.

Under the agreement, the CAS is to set up the first research coordination and promotion center in Thailand in order to support joint research projects between the two countries. In particular, the center will seek to integrate technology and innovation into the Eastern Economic Corridor project in line with the Thai government’s policy to develop the Eastern Economic Corridor of Innovation.

CAS President Bai Chunli stated that this research cooperation between Thailand and China is set to bring about technological advancements while at the same time strengthening their bilateral relations. After having visited Thailand several times and seeing the country’s progress, the President affirmed he is fully supportive of the cooperation. He also revealed his vision to raise the budget for research and development by 1 percent per GDP in the near future.
