BANGKOK: -- The Health Department has stressed the need for control of advertisements and marketing of infant formula milk or powdered milk to protect mothers and infants from misinformation about nutrition food for infants.

Department head Dr Wachira Pengchan said on Thursday that the bill to control marketing and advertisements of infant formula milk which is pending with the National Legislative Assembly was a must, noting that previous advertisements caused misunderstanding among mothers and parents regarding nutrition food for small children.

The bill, he said, was designed to protect mothers so that they would have access to accurate information which would help them make the right choice about the kind of food for their children free from influence of advertisements or marketing gimmicks.

Infants eyes aren't developed enough to see the difference between powdered and real milk, so this doesn't fix the root cause.

Thank you newbie for your smartass contribition about babies eyes.... and the root cause you refer to is what? I hope your post no. 3 is an improvement.

This story is about the advertising of infant milk formula or more to the point, false advertising.

I am pleased this initiative has ben taken. Having recetly had some involvent in this business it is important people (mothers) need to understand what is written on the label may not be anywhere near the truth. The Chinese have gone through this process of weeding out the false products which are not true to label. Thailand now needs to do the same.

Product is coming from dodgy suppliers around the world and sent to Asian countries (particularly Singapore) and dodgy nutritives are added and relabeled as originating in countries like Australia, New Zealand and other reputable European countries.

Well done Thailand!

Department hits back after group of paediatricians complain about new bill.

BANGKOK: -- THE HEALTH Department has dismissed doctors’ concerns that a bill to govern the promotion of food for infants and young children will backfire.

The bill was prepared based on the International Code of Marketing of Breast-Milk Substitutes and will apply to food products for children under three, as authorities seek to prevent marketing gimmicks from discouraging breastfeeding.

The bill, however, drew direct criticism from a network of paediatricians on Wednesday, prompting the Health Department to speak up yesterday.

My son only had breast milk then regular milk. Never had powdered milk.

Funny story ...one time wife's father was babysitting and son start crying so he took him across the street to a girl that had a baby too and got her to give him breast milk. I laughed when I heard it.
