Snakes, Turtles Seized in Minivan

A minivan with hundreds of turtles and pythons as passengers was stopped early yesterday by forestry administration officials in Kampong Chhnang province’s Samaki Meanchey district. Chea Sophorn, the deputy police chief of Svay commune, was informed of the operation but said his officers were not involved.

 

“Forestry administration officials from Kampong Tralach district followed the minivan from elsewhere and stopped it,” he said.  “The vehicle and wildlife were transferred to the forestry administration office which is in charge.”
 

Kampong Tralach forestry administration cantonment chief Hong Socheat said the operation netted turtles, pythons and the minivan from which the driver managed to escape. “The operation was at about 4am in the early morning [Thursday]. We confiscated 266 turtles and pythons weighing 150 kilograms,” he said.
