BANGKOK, 19th December 2016 (NNT) - Minister of Social Development and Human Security, Pol Gen Adul Saengsingkaew has appeared on the television program “Moving Thailand Forward” to discuss his Ministry’s policies towards preventing domestic violence.

In his appearance, Pol Gen Adul revealed that his ministry has received reports of numerous cases regarding physical or sexual violence affecting women and children. Although the numbers aren’t staggering, society must pay close attention to the reasons for domestic violence. He said common reasons include social inequality and misunderstandings that lead to violence and that the solution begins at the family level.

Pol Gen Adul said his ministry has allocated additional resources to its 1300 domestic violence hotline as well as engaging counselors and experts to give guidance to victims.

Would be interesting to get the latest statistics from the Minister...

According to former statistics (2009 to 2013), an average of 87 cases of sexual violence against women and children per day are reported in Thailand - about one case every 15 minutes. Officially the figure for 2013 was 31,866. The estimated number of unreported / undetected cases is correspondingly higher!

Nagging wives can be a trigger for violence but violence cannot be justified.

Read what I wrote! 'Violence cannot be justified'. Against women, children or anyone else for that matter.

Nagging wives, should only be told not to nag.

It would be interesting to know how many of the assailants were drugged up or drunk. Getting smashed on alcohol or high on ya ba appears to be a way of life among Thai men. I suspect this explains why so many women here avoid these dangerous stimulants - they have experienced first hand the brutal results.

While the government deserves praise for its ongoing efforts to reduce alcohol consumption and provide more help for rape victims, the decision to decriminalise ya ba - the cause of many instances of violence and sexual abuse - frankly seems bizarre.

Few men, of whatever nationality, behave better when they are the worse for drink or high on drugs. It is going to take a lot of time and a huge culture change before Thai women stop complaining to us falangs, "Thai men no good".
