BUT 68% IN THIS CATEGORY DO RESEARCH ONLINE, SURVEY FINDS

BANGKOK: -- A SURVEY by International Service Check has found that the Internet is playing a crucial role for Thai consumers of luxury products.

More than 68 per cent of customers are doing research online before making the decision to buy luxury items, but 72 per cent of luxury purchases are still taking place offline.

Among those who do research online, 67 per cent use non-brand-related channels, such as social media and online reviews, to help in their decision-making process.

Meanwhile, 53 per cent of consumers decide what to purchase through official brand communication online, 37 per cent make a decision in-store, while 35 per cent are likely to be influenced through recommendations from friends and family.

Ah, that explains all those shopping malls.

Wondered what they were for.

Thailand is currently reaching the highest rate of household debts in 8 years, with debts averaging around 119,000 baht per family.

It also explains rampant household dept.

Wife  wa s telling me yesterday of   a  friend she knows likes expensive things, bought a handbag 100000 baht, salary 20k a  month, borrowed most of it and she said "many" do this

The fact that Thai people were never good with saving and are an impulse buyers

is not a secrete, you stop a Thai person in the street and shake them upside

down and  all that will fall out will be 20 baht and some coins,

and while the country's house debts are sky rocketing, the shopping malls are always

full of buyers...

Just another facet of the "face" mentality. To be actually SEEN in a store selling ridiculously expensive goods would have a positive impact ! Would,t it be great if there was an Oxfam or St Vincent de Paul outlet on every block so that the smart people could be seen shopping :)

What I find astonishing is not that 72 per cent of people buy luxury goods from conventional sources, but that nearly a third of these purchases are already being made online.

With the convergence of robotics and technology, I suspect that In a couple of decades the majority of shopping malls will be gone and most of us will live in a cashless society, buying everything with plastic.

That is the good news, to some. The bad news is that the central banks (or maybe one giant global bank) will control our ability to spend what we like where we like - with a little help, no doubt, from our political masters.

(Yeah, I know - I'm just another conspiracy theorist)

Maybe buyers do not trust Thai websites, the Thai postal services, and Thai laws much.

Buying in-person is much safer in that case.

"Most Thais"?

Most of those who can afford luxury items, maybe.

There is a very healthy trade in original, luxury items on the internet here.

Very easy to pre-buy via a TG air-hostess.

This compliments the thread about tourists buying counterfeit items by proving Thais buy the real thing.

A cool place to cool off. I see the new shopping mall building activity has slacked off lately. Guess the moneyed gentry have finally figured out why their malls are full of people carrying no bags.

Cash leaves no paper trail.

It would be interesting to know how many Thais have a PC, internet, and a credit card to buy online. I am sure the younger ones are up to speed but I doubt the older folks have any idea how to go about it. Of course every one and his dog has a cell phone here.

Not sure about luxury items, but plenty of business is being done using Facebook and Line on mobile phones. Don't underestimate the amount of older people who buy this way. No credit card, laptop or desktop required.
