It must be serious. The Employment Rate is a clearly established and understood metric that is used in economic models. The labor participation rate is a metric used for political purposes because its numbers seem worse than the employment rate. Advocates of its use do not address the weaknesses in the metric's methodology by assuming every person is a potential worker including students, retirees, investors etc. It is clear why labor interests promote this statistic to benefit their interests. It is also clear why the Right have taken o offering this bogus metric to tarnish successful economic policies under Obama. I guess politics does make strange bedfellows.
