Thailand to experience longest night on Dec 22

BANGKOK, 21 December 2016 (NNT) - The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) has indicated that Thailand will tomorrow (December 22, 2016) experience a Winter Solstice, or the longest night in the year.

NARIT Deputy Director Dr. Saran Poshyachinda explained that the time and angle at which the sun rises and sets are different each day. However, the earth is currently angled 23.5 degrees away from the sun, creating an effect whereby those living in the northern hemisphere experience longer nights than the days.

The differences vary depending on the location. However, in Bangkok on December 22, the sun will rise at 6.37 a.m. and set at 5.56 p.m. This leaves only 11.19 hours of daylight.

Dr. Saran added that the earth orbits the sun in an oval revolution, making the distance between the Earth and the sun vary at any given time.

The Earth is also tilted at a 23.5 degree angle, but as it revolves around the Sun, the angle of light concentration varies, thereby creating the four seasons.

The Earth is typically closest to the sun in the beginning of January (at roughly 147 million kilometers), and will be farthest at the start of July (at 152 million kilometers).

Amazing deduction, let me take a stab and predict that 21 June 2017 will be the shortest day.

Would you also please predict the lottery numbers

Do bargirls jack up their "all night long" price?

Oddly enough all of the countries in the northern hemisphere will experience this. Those countries in the southern hemisphere will experience their shortest night.

The strange thing is that it happens once a year, a sort of annual event as it were.

Maybe a little different in Chiang Mai

Please don't spoil their fun, Thailand just discovered the winter Solstice :cheesy:

We are expecting a Nobel price announcement any minute now, and an obvious increase in tourists numbers: Maaan, we got a Solstice... :giggle:

Has TAT predicted 43 trillion tourist arrivals to watch this event yet?

Aye. Tomorrow night is the highlight of "I love you long time" 555

" This leaves only 11.19 hours of daylight. " OMG how will they live through this? Try living in Norway or Alaska if you want a short day.

Isn't that the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere ?

Breaking news:

" The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) has indicated that Thailand will tomorrow (December 22, 2016) experience a Winter Solstice, or the longest night in the year."

And in other news:

" This is attested by physical remains in the layouts of late Neolithic and Bronze Age archaeological sites, such as Stonehenge in England and Newgrange in Ireland. The primary axes of both of these monuments seem to have been carefully aligned on a sight-line pointing to the winter solstice sunrise (Newgrange) and the winter solstice sunset (Stonehenge)."

this sort of reminds me of when I told my Thai girlfriend about what causes high and low tides.

She said "Impossible. Caused by rain."

Not quite so simple. Because Thailand lies between the Equator and the Tropic of Cancer it experiences two longest days, coinciding with when the sun is directly overhead at midday. In Bangkok these are likely to fall in April and September.

Newflash:   Emm,  the shortest day thing?   It actually happens not just in Thailand, but all over the world.

Ah yes but it is different here...
