15 foreign tourists injured in Surat Thani bus crash

 

 

SURAT THAI: -- Fifteen foreign tourists, were injured when the chartered bus they travelled from Bangkok to Surat Thani went off the highway, flipped over and overturned before dawn Wednesday in Thachana district.

 

The accident happened on Highway 41 in Surat Thani at 05.22 am today.

 

Highway police said the bus with 17 foreign tourists was on the way to Krabi province after leaving Bangkok yesterday evening.

 

It was raining heavily as the bus was approaching Km 118 on Highway 41.

Raining heavily so the bus lipped over taking a curve !

Driving with regard to the prevailing conditions or driving in spite of the conditions ?

Long run that if they are using only one driver,I see many similar incidents on this stretch of road on my monthly travels down to Trang,lack of awareness/sleep are the usual culprits.

Just another statistic to add to road safety and driving skills in Thailand (or lack of)

It never ends.

 

To save money, the gov should make their people ride the bus. After a few of them die in crashes, mayve, just mayve they would rethink things and get tough on the bus/van companies and drivers.

 

Until then, poor people and foreigner take the bus. No loss if they die. They are hardly people anyway.

No report on the driver.  He either ran away (where do these folks go?) or he has rounded up the usual excuses - brake failure, another vehicle, ghosts...  And he will be driving next month as if nothing ever happened.  Until the government gets serious (and we all know they won't) this will be an ongoing problem.  

It'd be so easy for this govt, with no opposition and article 44, to sort out the driving problems here. But they prefer to concentrate on the easier jobs like land encroachment, the lottery and computer crime, not to mention settling scores with the PTP.

Second bus today that flippin' flipped in the rain . Will it be a train later that flips ?

This is why i wont let my wife travel on a bus in this country !!

Seems to be one a day.

Some of the tour buses are actually quite good and have 2 drivers and quite well maintained vehicles (do need do homework before travel though), mini vans however are serious risk and I avoid them as had and seen and heard to many bad incidents . dying would be easy, lying in agony awaiting thai style paramedics and the potential bill would be horrifying ...

I miss the newspaper's / the driver's standard excuse "The driver was not at all familiar with the road and difficult weather conditions"

There hasn't been a driver fled the scene for quite a while.They seem to have developed an excuse book recently.Rain and road seem the most popular.

Does anyone really believe that those at the top of the food chain care? They are only interested in looking after themselves. You cannot change a culture overnight, Thais have had 100's of years of practice of not changing the status quo. The "class system" is alive and well and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future, despite the utterances of authority for the benefit and happiness of Thai people. Bulls hit reigns supreme, I think.

Any tourists who dont research Thai Buses before they travel better learn fast and taking a bus overnight is the nearest to Russian Roulette they'll ever get to playing!

 There's only one operator and that's NCA Gold Class. They have two drivers and usually only the best drivers. Not some lari fari kids on jabba.

I wonder if the Thai press have highlighted text with their mouse about 20 years ago ready for a quick copy and paste "The driver said the brakes failed"
