Free whistles distributed to Thammasat students as self-defence

BANGKOK: -- Hundreds of whistles have been distributed to Thammasat University students on Monday and Tuesday as part of the “Make Your Voice Louder” programme launched by the university’s student organization in cooperation with the student council of the university’s Rangsit campus and the broadcasting club of the university.

The student organization said in its web page: “It is a question that many people doubt and pay attention to – how good the whistle is and how it can help in self-defence?”

It went on saying that a whistle can be carried anywhere and can be used in case of emergency, especially when an untoward incident such as a snatching took place in a crowded venue or a woman was molested on a bus.

...............well, it works for parking attendants!

Aren't there enough whistlers in Bangkok?

I never react to whistles now as I hear them all the time.

Only recently I had a cop yelling at me because I walked over a footbridge as a convoy was passing under. He had frantically been blowing his whistle at me to stop.

:cheesy::cheesy::cheesy::cheesy:

Of course they are neon pink to allow them to be carried unobtrusively. Sheesh!

Good luck to the Thammasat students....about the only Uni in Thailand that has kids with balls!

I hear soo many whistles, i don't react anymore.

I hope the students have more sense than to believe that they will be safe if they carry a whistle.

Just let them watch Betty and Bogie.

I'd love to think the students have inadvertently been armed with offensive weapons as we know what uses a whistle can be put to !

It will only take one student anywhere to blow a whistle at a protest and it will probably become a criminal offence to possess one as there will be the intent to criticize the government !

And gang member students can blow their whistles while they get filled full of lead as they ride their motorbikes

Students are all around 20 yo and should be strong persons. Better let them do sport at the campus instead of playing candycrush all day.

Do the males also get a whistle? Maybe they can make extra money as a parkingassistant at the mall with that?

I would be so ashamed to need a whistle to be safe, and they even stay at a protected campus all days.

A whistle? The bad guys have guns and knives. Surely they would be better off with a wooden batton and a shield.

Can't stand those whistles. Them parking lot guys just feel so important with them. My little boy had a toy one he got in Kinder egg. After I heard enough of it I trashed it when he wasn't around.

There has been a rapist attacking people around the Rangsit campus for the past two months. The news has died down so I don't know if he was caught yet. One girl was raped on the bridge just outside the main campus gates.

I think it has made a lot of people nervous at night, which is why they've introduced these whistles.

I go to Thammasat several times a week and it is certainly not a protected campus.

It's a lot worse than chulalongkorn in that respect, where the security is quite heavy. I see maybe 1-2 security guards a day, who are really just glorified traffic attendants. and not much CCTV because the campus is so spread out.

Also - students dont stay at campus all day, the majority still live off-site.

Why do students have to be protected anyway? For sexy slim weak girls i can understand it a bit but it's the same for all other girls as well who don't go to university.

And why do they only give whistles to Thammasat? Is that a risky place while  others are more safe?

In the West i have never ever seen any security at universities at all. They have a concierge but they are more for general tasks.

So preparing them for Car Park Duties really advanced thinking by Management for once .Crafty.!!

always a justification to make a satang

Not sure how much safer it will make them, everytime I hear a whistle, strangulation comes to mind!

Mr. Prayuth could possibly misconstrue this as "attack" on his form of democracy.

Great, more whistles no one pays attention to.

Somchai: Shhhh... is that a pooying being attacked? I hear a whistle!

Porn: No, it's the dirty parking lot boy from Myanmar.

I'm 100% sure they will soon be sold with a little 9 on them, in black.

Whenever I see a beautiful girl its getting harder to pucker up the old whistle. One of these might solve my problem.

So, they give out whistles to thwart attacks, and helmets to slow deaths by motorbikes, but no option to get the police to do their job.

Defend yourself in a knife attack with a whistle you're gonna come off second best!

As for a reaction from the general public they will sit back & video you on a mobile as usual!

Of course, things being as they are in LOS the lowest bidder won the tender to supply the whistles which, in small print. are marked 'Dog Whistles..........Ah! Peace perfect peace,

You have whistles all round you blowing in Thailand and you never give them a second thought.  I think I have become immune to the sound of a whistle now.

Geez haven't you heard of 7 Eleven crime reporting?  Policed joined forces with 7 Eleven  a couple of years back and they are now your best option.  If 7 Eleven can't handle it they can decided if they want to handball the incident to police.
