UN Warns of Growing Crisis as Aid Fails to Reach Gazans Despite Border Crossings
Below is an interesting article on the difficulties bringing food and aid into Gaza. Checkpoints, looters, and warzones – the obstacles in the way of Gaza food parcels A brief summary: 1. UNRWA's warehouses and logistics were destroyed by Israel's invasion of Rafah last May. 2. Israeli anti-aid activists at Kerem Shalom protest food deliveries, saying it's undermining the war effort. 3. Passing Israeli security, trucks have to be unloaded, causing long delays. 4. Anaesthetics, oxygen cylinders, water filtration systems, dates, sleeping bags, and maternity kits are not allowed into Gaza. due to Israeli claims some items have potential military use. 5. According to the UN, over 400 humanitarian workers have been killed in the conflict whilst UN warehouses have been bombed by the Israel Defence Force (IDF), and humanitarian workers killed on routes already approved by the army. 6. Looting- during periods of scarcity, looting increases. A stretch of road three kilometres long near the crossing saw drivers attacked by groups of criminals aiming to seize their goods. A light at the end of the tunnel? Supplies are ready to go at scale, says Louise Wateridge, senior emergency officer at UNRWA. She said UNRWA have warehouses full of enough supplies to feed 200,000 people for a month. In addition , the UN and all the NGOs have supplies sitting and waiting. -
