Former head of Helsinki drug squad sentenced in drug smuggling scandal

HELSINKI: -- The former head of Helsinki police’s drug squad has been sentences to ten years in jail for his role in smuggling close to a ton of hashish into Finland.

Jari Aarnio faces a total of 13 years in prison, including a previous jail term related to the purchase of police surveillance equipment.

He was found guilty of organising the smuggling of around 900 kilograms of the drug from the Netherlands and preventing police from investigating the case.

The court said in a statement that Aarnio had ruthlessly abused his position and his actions had endangered public trust in the police.

After his arrest in 2013, Aarnio denied all charges.

The case is rare in Finland – a country which anti-corruption watchdog Transparency International classes as the second least corrupt country in the world behind Denmark.

Give him another 10 years for all the people he jailed for drugs.

hashish is not exactly like heroin is it?  legalize cannabis and be done with this utter nonsense of controlling what people want to enjoy and, in many cases, what they need for medical conditions

I agree (maybe not for exactly the same reasons).

But this guy was in a position of trust and abused his powers. I doubt that he imported nearly a tonne of hashish for altruistic reasons - easy money more like.

10 years seems to be a light sentence considering his position as head of the Drugs Squad.

As Colabamumbai intimated in #ID2 - he has been jailing people for lesser crimes than his.

Middle of a drought and the water commissioner drowns. Only in LA.

Dude like he was transporting the evidence to the locker...
