Work permit required as a contributing writer, no pay.

Featured Replies

Happy new years gents, and mams,

I am sure the sages of TV would be able to answer this question.  Do you require a work permit as a contributing writer (no payment for the articles) to a monthly magazine?

With all the stories and immigration officials wanting to flex their authority, for example giving a speech to a Thai group or people talking about your experience living and working in Thailand was indicated as needing a work permit.

Also, what if you do this on-line?  Is a work permit required?   Or could you do it a guest writer as in the BKK post contributors?

Cheers Mates

It seems what you would be doing is one of those out of sight out of mind situations. As long as they never know what you are doing there cannot be a problem.

As for your example I don't think that would be a problem. Certain things can be done without a work permit.

I wouldn't put my name in the article

some would recognize the writing style...

Do as authors have done since the beginning of time - use an alias :) :jap:

According to the letter of the law, you will be operating outside the rules. As a practical matter, it is virtually impossible for you to do what you want in any legal fashion, and the authorities will turn a blind eye as long as you are discreet about it. I would suggest you stay away from controversial subjects!

If it is for a local publication, then yes you do open yourself up to scrutiny. If it is from overseas and there is no paper trail to here, no worries.

"only" a food review?  An unhappy restaurant owner may turn you in!

Creative writing as a hobby.. Becomes a very grey area.. I have seen official statements where non monetized hobby blogging is considered ok.. But thats counter to the 'paid or unpaid' in the definition of work..

This question is related http://phuketgazette.net/issuesanswers/Do-need-work-permit-write-letters/1191

But you can see how they avoid the question.. If paid its work.. If letters or complaints its not.. But if its an upaid article ?? I guess that was too hard to answer.
