Just seen on Thai news a cop breathalysing a bus driver. The meter had a small white funnel, the driver's mouth was about 50mm from the funnel, he blew for about 1 second, cops saluted, on ya way. Surely this can't be right.
Anyone had any dealings with breathalysers here?

This year it seemed to be more of a "clean-up operation" after the event!!

Oh dear, Thailand: it starts with the people ......

As John McEnroe would have said "You cannot be serious!!!!!!!!!"   The families of the 426 dead and the thousands injured in just 6 days will feel sick to their stomachs to read the P.M's absurd comments and congratulations.  He could hardly be more insensitive if he tried.

Errrr- what effort? All i saw was cops and other officials sat in tents scratching their erses and swigging water as countless helmet-less motorbikes drove/sped past,. The checkpoint was only on one side of the road in a position it could be easily bypassed- complete waste of time.

Indeed, when stop a van with bald tyres impound it, don't let it go on promise they fit new tomorrow . Idiots from top to bottom. Buck Banana is the supreme clown running the lemming circus ...

Well done for for beating last years low figures ...

And check license at same time, although i suppose this is asking too much. No license, no drive !

Overheard at a traffic violation pay booth in Samui last week...

Farang: Do I need to go and get my crash helmet to ride my bike now

BiB:  No problem, you pay already

Was that the check point opposite the Maenam Police station, where they had cones down the centre of the road and were only checking helmets one way ?  And waving the opposite side on .

You got to remember, this figure is only those who died at the roadside, i know that there were more  hospital deaths from road accidents.

And we've just had one of the worst accidents this week where 25 people were burnt alive. An the PM is thanking everyone.

Unbelievable & typical Thainess.

khwaibah - who do you think should be fired? What are they supposed to do? Put one Policeman in every pickup and on every motorbike? Guess just close the roads would work!

If the cops would get off their freakin lazy ass and do their jobs their would be less I am sure.  But the biggest problem starts at the top.

LOGBOOKS TO THE RESCUE!

"Referring to the high road accidents and fatalities during the New Year’s long holidays despite the government’s “no drunk driving campaign, the prime minister said that his government had exhausted all the means to reduce the accidents and the resulting fatalities, “be it the use of Section 44 to impound cars, making arrests and everything and yet people still get killed.”

“Simple fact. If there are activities, there are consequences as occurred. Many people using cars, cheap oil, good roads and cars run faster while drunk driving remains. So what laws can solve these problems besides the spirit of joint participation of every one of us. You asked how they can be solved? We in the cabinet have discussed the issue long enough,” said the prime minister, adding that he preferred the next government to tackle the problems.

However, he said that he had one last option to deal with rogue public transport drivers within the next three months from now.

The prime minister said that every bus and passenger van driver must keep a logbook in which he or she must note down his/her name, the driving time, the route.

Police at every checkpoint must check the logbooks. If a driver is found to have driven beyond the time limit, the vehicle must be impounded and all passengers told to get off to board a new van or bus and a new driver must be found,” said the prime minister.

He also threatened to replace rogue drivers with military personnel.

The prime minister blamed past governments for doing nothing to deal with illegal passenger vans, but allowing them to be registered and to operate legally while breaking all the safety rules, be it overloading, speeding, illegal modification of the vehicles.

However, he admitted that the government alone would not be able to solve the problem with passenger vans unless all parties concerned join hands to solve the problems."

Thanks them for their efforts ?

Can these "efforts" be defined ?

What was achieved ?

I'd like to know what the authorities actually did.

Death-rate increased.

80 a day are killed daily on the roads. Yes 80 a day.

Failed Efforts get thanked :cheesy:

Thank them for what? Doing their job? Is 426 dead doing their job?

haha, no this was Chaweng, as for the Maenam thing....... they are just lulling you into a false sense of security, a few weeks back I had a passenger with no helmet but I was wearing one, we were waved through going towards Maenam, but 15 minutes later on my return I was stopped and duly fined for my wrong doings

Thanking those who have presided over yet another increase in road traffic accidents and deaths is akin to governments' addressing the last financial crisis by handing banks taxpayers' funds so they could pay bonuses to the incompetent morons responsible.

Until the transport minister, DoLT and the RTP decide to do their job and enforce the laws, throughout the year, every year, with swingeing penalties for those who break them, the PM's praise is pure hokum.

Interesting reading , however from what I read the bulk of the deaths are motorbike related, read poor working class Thai. The ruling elite do not care how many of these low level worker ants die as there will always be more to replace them. Keep wages low and whisky cheap and the elite will keep raking in the Baht. Nothing else is of any importance.

Ya Right. He's given up on reducing rhevgrowing number fatalities, so what the heck.....praise those whom failed in those efforts. Ridiculous!

Ok then. Job done. Go back to doing nothing to enforce the laws until the next seven-deadly-day period. Seriously, you guys deserve a standing ovation for such a fantastic display of utter stupidity.
