PM thanks authorities for New Year road safety efforts

BANGKOK, 4 January 2017 (NNT) - Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has thanked the authorities who have helped to provide road safety and ensure public safety during the New Year celebrations.

According to Spokesman to the Prime Minister’s Office Lt Gen Sansern Keawkamnerd, Gen Prayut had expressed his gratitude to those working hard to manage traffic and ensure road safety for holidaymakers during the New Year holiday.

The premier also urged those still making their way back to Bangkok to drive carefully and respect traffic regulations.

Meanwhile, many buses were seen arriving from all parts of the country at Mo Chit Bus Terminal on Wednesday. As many as 1,000 additional buses were added the service to ensure that there would be enough available seats for all passengers.

Due to insufficient taxis, people were encouraged to take public buses from the terminal.

Don Muang International Airport was also bustling with arriving passengers from domestic and overseas flights.

National Police Commander Pol Gen Chakthip Chaijinda instructed every metro police officer to do their best to facilitate people's return trips to Bangkok.

Why ??? They have just killed 426 with a day to go. Unbelievable. They should all be fired.

Pure, Thainess. Farang not understand!

And wd with the toll, by now around 500, they only wished they had the opportunity to thank him for any effort by authorities.

As usual, its all talk no action, pat yourself on the back for doing nothing at all.

khwaibah - who do you think should be fired? What are they supposed to do? Put one Policeman in every pickup and on every motorbike? Guess just close the roads would work!

How about actually doing their job and enforcing the law!

Indeed, when stop a van with bald tyres impound it, don't let it go on promise they fit new tomorrow . Idiots from top to bottom. Buck Banana is the supreme clown running the lemming circus ...

Well done for for beating last years low figures ...

Seems a crazy country with irresponsibility the number 1 description, unless someone can think of a better description

Overheard at a traffic violation pay booth in Samui last week...

Farang: Do I need to go and get my crash helmet to ride my bike now

BiB:  No problem, you pay already

So the PM obviously finds the death toll acceptable

And thats where the responsibility lies

The ones who only sit in tents can be fired but the ones in Chinatown are really working hard now. They kicked the streetvendors of the sidewalk, put wheelclamps on motocy's and cars which park on the road. I've seen them on patrol everywhere, so yes it's possible to get them to do their jobs.

In further comments he suggested that drivers should follow his own example of safe travel by being driven in large multi-vehicle convoys, ensuring that all non-authorized traffic is blocked along the planned route and employing a minimum of ten armed motorcycle escorts with sirens and flashing lights.

He thanked them?!

For what?

And what has he done, except producing hot air?

The goal was, to reduce traffic- casualties by 5%!

So he thanked them, for achieving NOTHING!

The new year in Thailand is only 4 days old and I feel, I need a happy hour...soon!

:bah:

The PM's earlier vacuous pleadings to drivers seem to have had no effect.

Perhaps he could present a Road Safety Song to give moral support to drivers and the law "enforcers".

Maybe that might work.

Whoever said the PM was lacking a sense of humor?

Waste of time trying to get through the Thai mentality. Just move on. Tomorrow is another day.

Watched 2 cops on a semi big bike in phuket chase down a speeding backfiring motorbike as it passed them.

When i cought up they already were diving into the rice bag he had onboard looking for something. So guess it wasnt the speed or backfire they wanted.

But hey its a start.

Are you sure it wasn't the ricebag they gave him for being a good boy?

The police could get rich from fining loud backfiring cars and motobikes in my area. But they sit in tents 24hrs, practising for their inactive post.

Al007 you have hit the nail on the head.

The Prime Minister obviously thinks  that the carnage is acceptable so that's the end of it.

Land Transport & police have tried & FAILED AGAIN.

Fire the whole lot & start again,

When I see  public service vehicles paying tea money (as do the bars to police) to be issued a Warrant  Of Fitness  I cringe.

i doubt it will ever change.

Bring on Songkran for another massacre.

Yep a few 1000 poor people less a year via motor accidents, and the world for the influential elite is fine..... good job

He can't be reading the same news as us.

That's so true. I see bikes and old Disco trucks flying up Sukhumvit with smoke pouring out of them, motorbikes weighed down by the 4 passengers plus rider. The police certainly could make a "Killing" (Pun not intended) and an example if they ever leave their gambling tent.

Oh <deleted> Scotty, beam him up please.

They were thanked for turning up to work. Their efforts show in the results which we know are terrible. The bar is always set so low in this country. It's very disappointing.

They will continue to drive drunk, motorbikes and vans driving like complete maniacs many wired on yaba.
No amount of police in the world would stop that.

It's gonna take another 20 years before that culture changes.
