PHUKET:-- Police have called off the hunt for two foreign men caught on CCTV “borrowing” a motorbike from in front of a barber shop in Patong.

The men later left the motorbike parked neatly beside the police box on the bustling Phra Metta Rd.

The alarm was raised by Anan Detruang, who reported to police yesterday (Jan 4) that his motorbike had been stolen from in front of his unnamed barber shop on Nanai Rd.

“Mr Anan said that he had left the key in the motorbike. When he came out, his motorbike was gone. So he checked the CCTV for the building and saw that two foreigners had turned up outside his shop (at about 9:41pm),” explained Col Somsak Thongklieng of the Patong Police.

One of the men got on the bike and casually rode off, without wearing a helmet.

At last one for the farang team. I can think of at least 5 friends who lost a bike permanently in Phuket by local thieves. Why the outrage when the shoe is on the other foot?

What!?? The fellow was going to ride it back to their country of origin?!! He just wanted to get back to his hotel/resort quickly when he saw an opportunity. He was responsible and sensible enough to leave it with the police. Yes, a misdemeanor - but only that. Not a crime, imo.

Not a crime? I can't believe where you're coming from. They took and drove away without permission, its theft, no ifs buts or maybe's. If they had been caught on the bike they would've been charged, the fact that they conveniently dumped it by a police box is totally irrelevant

So joyriding a motorbike is farang vs Thai.

Looks like it was illegally parked before stolen ,maybe that moved it so the guy didn't get a ticket ,they probably didn't know the police are too lazy to uphold the laws here

"Borrowing' a vehicle is not theft. Theft is the taking of property with intent to PERMANENTLY deprive the owner of ownership. This sort of behaviour is covered by Statutory Law with it being an offence to take and use a motor vehicle without permission. These laws were specifically designed to punish 'borrowing' and or 'joyriding' of vehicles.
