Army cadet dies in parachute accident

An army cadet who was a student at the Army Institute died on Friday during parachute training in Kampong Speu province, an official said.  National Defense Ministry spokesman General Chhum Socheat said the cadet plunged to the ground and died during a training jump from a helicopter.  
 

“The reason he died is that the parachute failed to open,” Gen. Socheat said, and asked that the cadet’s name could not be revealed until relatives had been contacted.  He added that the ministry will investigate the causes behind the death. 
 

According to an official who asked not to be unnamed, the dead man was a cadet in the army and a student at the Army Institute in Kampong Speu province.  He was training to do jumps with Parachute Brigade 911. His parachute malfunctioned after he jumped from a helicopter at the brigade’s field in Kampong Speu.

Of course not - unless, as a newbie Jumper, you have a death wish.

 

"Packing" a parachute is not particularly difficult once you know some basics, and packing a Standard TU Canopy is not really a problem; even then however no responsible Jump Master would ever consider allowing a new recruit to do such a thing.

 

That said, if this chap was a new Jumper - as it seems - I cannot understand why the Canopy did not open. He should have been Jumping on a "Static Line" which would have automatically ripped the Canopy from his Backpack a few seconds after he left the 'plane - even if the man was unconscious,

haaa i was waiting for somebody to mention Thai or Thailand. Specialy when this was in Cambodja.

Static line or otherwise, parachutes do infrequently "roman candle", or not deploy. More to the question is why the poor chap didn't use his "reserve", which is attached to his chest and operated manually. Of course, it also depends on the altitude he was dropping from. Low level, circa 300 metres gives you less than 2 seconds to react to a malfunctioning main chute.

At clubs here in Australia we always pack our own chutes. You are taught how to do this after only a few jumps.  Cos other people dont want to keep packing your chute. Its not a difficult task. In the military they have their own packers. Most chute are not packed by the jumper.
