Flying back home with a Visa on arrival expired by one day?

Featured Replies

Hi. Ok, so I am in the middle of a big mess, hoping I can know what will happen in the future.

I arrived to Bangkok on the 10th of December with a Tourist visa on arrival valid until the 8th of January (sunday), as it was stamped on my passport (the visa paper got a stamp with no date). I had major surgery and my flight back home was supposed to happen today 7th, but due to a massive flight delay that I was notified less than 24 hours in advance and would make me lose the connecting flight and leave me stranded on an airport until I am assigned a new connecting flight, I had to reeschude it to next available flight, Monday 9 at 11:25 AM. It was not possible take the delayed flight as I am limited to the number of hours I can be left without medical attention and resting in bed.

Obviously, I haven't been able to check with inmigration as offices are closed on saturday and sunday, and I am scheduled to be picked by the driver to be carried to the airport at monday at 8:30 (I will have to go through the airport with a wheelchair and assistance, to make matters worse). The question is, what will happen when they notice that my visa has expired and I am overstaying by 11 hours? I don't know if will have to pay a fine or something, in which case it would be nice to know how much money I have to bring in bahts.

Thanks.

You will be fine. 1 day overstay leaving by air is no fine.

Have a great day

As said, immigration at the airport routines allows a one-day grace period. It is designed to cater for situations, like yours, of flight delays or cancellations causing travelers to need to leave late. Relax.

As said, one day grace period, sometimes one gets an overstay stamp, which has no consequences further down the road. Nothing to worry about.

Thanks, that gives me a bit of peace of mind.

I was told that overstaying my visa can cause for a future visa on arrival to be denied, not sure if this can apply to one day. That it would be safer if for my next vacation (I may need to come back for a surgery revision / follow up) to get a visa with the thai embassy at my country before coming, to stay on the safe side. I wanted to do this for emergency purposes, but I was not keen on mailing my passport and I needed 2 days of vacations to travel to where the embassy is, which I could not afford.

Relax and sleep well before being driven tomorrow morning.

Have your passport and your flight booking out of the country at hand.

Driver brings you straight to airport.

Don't worry.

A mate was due to arrive at 12.3o and  the flight was early. He was stamped in at 11.45 and forgot about it and fined 500 baht for overstay. perhaps with a medical issue the jobsworths might be lenient.

I suspect that was at a border crossing or at an airport other than the two in Bangkok.

No problem at all . I have a few days overstay stamps in my PP with a fine also and have never had any issues with entering Thailand or getting visas

There are no 30 day visas on arrivals, what you got was a visa exempt 30 day arrival.

Shouldn't be a oroblem anyhow as they often allow no problem for only one day overstay.

But you will probably get a note put in your passport saying you overstayed one day.

That will not cause any problems on arrival  later however.

You and your friends need to understand that  a visa exempt entry starting in 2017 may be limited to 2 entries per year.

At present I believe this only applies to land borders not arrivals by air.

However, be aware of  that new rule which started on 1 January 2017.

Also do you know that if you arrive on a 30 day visa exempt you can get a 30 day extension on that first 30 days at immigration by paying a 1900 Baht fee for another 30 days.

I was made to pay the 500b fine for one day overstay. It happened because I thought I had one month not 30 days. Tingtong. 5555

It's not like I want to come here more than once per year. It's nice for one or two weeks of vacation, but I don't think I could live here.

And my new flight also got delayed again, but I can't wait more. I have to be thankful to my surgeon for talking with the hotel to let me stay a bit more until the driver picks me at the new scheduled time 3 hours before the plane leaves at 16:20. Also giving me advice on what to do since with 9 hours between flights stuck in france things will get kinda tight unless the airline provides a place for 60 minutes at the airport for management of my wounds.

Got 2000 baht left on my wallet, hoping it will be enough. Getting wheelchaired on the airport (I can walk, but they want me to not strain myself and conserve energies for emergencies) and I may be able to go faster through inmigration line, from what they tell me.

Last time I fly with Air France. I kinda like this country, but they are really souring me on the experience.

Well, I'm back home. In the end I had to endure on another delay, and I was not able to leave until 23:00. The guy pushing my wheelchair brought me to inmigration after going through the secondary security checkpoint, and... 500 tbh fine. The new stamp in my passport does not seem to say overstay, just the day I left and some characters I don't understand next to it (maybe that's the overstay mention).

Last ever time I fly with Air France.

those characters may well be the flight number, in your case maybe AF123 or so
