PHUKET: -- A university student was killed after a taxi, the driver of which reportedly fell asleep at the wheel, crashed into her motorbike in Thalang this morning.

“The incident occurred about 7:30am on the road between Thalang and Baan Don. The victim, Jiraporn Plotpai, 21, was lying on the side of the road, her face and body covered in blood,” said Lt Sunan Petnhu of Thalang Police.

Ms Jiraporn, a 4th year student at Phuket Rajabhat University, was rushed to Thalang Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

“At the scene, we also found a white Toyota Prius and Honda Scoopy-i motorbike, both damaged. The motorbike had fallen inside a waterway by the side of the road,” said Lt Sunan.

What a waste- 'fell asleep' is starting to rank right alongside 'brake failure' as an excuse. I passed the guy who went off a bend and drowned  along there the other year  just after it happened.

If one is going to drive, pay attention- don't fiddle with sh1t, play with phones, pick yer nose, etc just DRIVE!

RIP young woman who was just starting out in life.

Amen this falling asleep at the wheel comment seems to be an every day occurrence.

They have the common sense of five year olds and fall asleep just as easily.

Someone with sense would stop the car, get out and do some running on the spot. Failing that start slapping yourself around the chops while shouting loudly. I've done it many times myself.

He should be charged with manslaughter and spend five years in jail.

He will probably get a 5,000 baht and be back behind the wheel soon.

Not that we'll ever know as follow-up reporting is almost non-existent.
