Families to receive Thai compensation

Featured Replies

Three Cambodians killed in a traffic accident in Thailand last month have received compensation from the owner of the truck that caused the crash and embassy officials are working to get the company to foot the hospital bills of those injured in the crash. On December 30, a van with 29 Cambodian longan farm laborers was hit by a 10-wheel truck in Thailand’s Chonburi province.

According to a statement from the Foreign Affairs Ministry, the families of the three Cambodians killed in the crash – 27-year-old Teng Chhaly from Siem Reap province, 35-year-old Much Samon from Prey Veng province and 21-year-old Van Chanrith from Battambang province – will receive 52,000 baht (about $1,500), with 22,000 baht coming from their employer and 30,000 baht from the owner of the truck that caused the accident. Chum Sounry, the spokesman for the Foreign Affairs Ministry, said that outside of the three people killed in the accident, four people were suffering from serious injuries and four others sustained minor wounds.

“All 29 workers were hired to pick longan fruit by their Thai employer, 52-year-old Thim Vichhai. Since they don’t have work permits, they have not received any insurance,” he said. An estimated one million Cambodians work in Thailand as laborers or factory workers on short and long-term contracts.

ThaiVisa, it's also in French

That's all a life is worth???  About $2500 total.  The employer, employing without WP's, s and the owner of the truck that caused the crash, should be cleaned out and their entire worth given to the families.
