Govt to open flood relief center today

BANGKOK, 10 January 2016 (NNT) - Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has ordered every government unit to help southern residents cope with the ongoing flood crisis.

The premier said the higher amount of rainfall this year had caused severe flooding in 10 southern provinces. He claimed the government is doing its best to drain the flood waters into the sea. However, it is difficult at present for help and survival items to be distributed to the inundated communities.

Gen Prayut added the Thai government already has relief and rehabilitation measures in place and will implement them after the floods recede. The government is also planning to officially open a flood relief center today after His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun expressed his concerns over the plight of southern residents.

According to Deputy Prime Minister Wisanu Krea-Ngam, His Majesty the King wanted the government to ensure that every flood victim receives the help they need. In addition, cabinet members will table flood solutions expected to be proposed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives and the Ministry of Interior in the weekly Cabinet meeting today.
