BANGKOK: -- A 50 year old snapping turtle was a surprise visitor to a house in Chacherngsao yesterday.

The 45 kilo specimen appeared at the house of Maneerom Janthorn in Bang Wua sub-district.

The turtle had an injury to its front left foot so Maneerom decided to call in some experts from the Chachernsao Foundation for help.

The turtle was 50 centimeters wide and 70 long and was reckoned to be about 50 years old. Snapping turtles are thought to live up to about 70 years.

The foundation staff took the unusual guest away for rehabilitation at a fisheries center nearby.

Bring me a bowl of turtle soup... and make it snappy! (just kidding)

Hallo...not really a Snapping Turtle at all but rather an Asian Softshell turtle....they seem quite docile compared to our N. American Snappers....it was probably looking for a mate or a nesting area . I found one up in Nong Khai  on a road near the Mekong last year....maybe 30kgs . We gave it to the local Aquarium .

Ha Ha! So true. In Vietnam turtle it is called Ba Ba. They breed them for the table and there are special restaurants that sell them. It is a special social occasion. They bring the turtle to the table for approval and then if OK they slit the throat in a bucket beside the table and keep the blood which is drunk later mixed with vodka in shooter glasses. Later the cooked turtle comes back to the table and everyone is into it. Not much to recommend really. The legs had a bit of meat on them but the rest was just like eating plastic. Thank you for sharing the meal with me.
