BANGKOK: -- BUOYED by a brighter outlook for Thailand’s economy, with a related boost in spending power and expectations for more tourists, the Emporium Shopping Complex Co forecasts sales growth of 10 to 15 per cent this year.

The deputy managing director of the upmarket retailer, Manatase Annawat, said the number of visitors to its Emporium and EmQuartier shopping malls rose by about 15 per cent last year.

“Growth was especially strong in the festive season at year-end when the government came out with measures to stimulate spending and waive VAT on purchases,” he said.

“The company continues to see many positive factors to driving growth this year and expects more stimulus packages will follow to promote business and growth in the retail industry this year.”

Hmmm.

Don't these guys rent space to retailers?  What do you figure they'd tell their prospective renters if business was expected to be in the toilet next year?  Not a great year to rent?

Green shoots springing up everywhere. Forecasts hmm a dime a dozen. Look at all the so called economists running around saying buy buy buy. Don't see much government money coming down the pipe it seems clogged with promises. Look at history to see how all these so called promises have worked out.

15% increase in visitors in 2016 from 2015.  emquartier was open about half of 2015.  i sure hope a full year of being open could beat the previous year in total visitors.  sounds like a poor year for emporium and emquartier.  i visit a couple times a week and i don't see people strolling around with bags of goods in their hands.

Better dig up that park next door and build a new mall.....call it EmPty....:coffee1:

Don't worry. The old Washington Square where presently houses dinosaurs, is on the drawing board for another mall...

That's not Thai to walk around with bags, it's already brought to their cars in the parking.

Emquartier was not busy at all in 2016 at the times we visited. The best thing of both malls is that there are not many thai families who bring their nasty kids and that they speak english.

I live far from centre, but will often go to Paragon because I like to eat at "dressed".

Paragon and any other lux mall does have a lot of visitors, but I think most of them eat at restaurants and foodcourts.

I don't see many people shopping. I do see a lines at LV and Hermes, but I don't see many buyers.

Perhaps hiso TV members could prove me wrong?

using simple math, let's say emporium had 50 visitors in 2015 (full year) and emquartier had 50 also (half a year).  so a 15% increase would be 115 visitors in total for the 2 in 2016.  but most analysts would adjust the number for 2015 for emquartier to reflect a full year.  call it 100 (50x2).  if both malls had an equal amount of visitors in 2016 compared to 2015, it would be 150.  it sounds to me like they had a decrease in visitors.
