CHIANG MAI: -- Chiang Mai doctor Jakkrit Klapajone won the Northern Thailand Scrabble Championships in his hometown on Sunday.

Jakkrit – one of the top players in the world – defeated Bangkok’s Charnwit Sukhumrattanporn in the two game final on a giant board at the Airport Plaza shopping centre.

The board – shown in the photograph above – wowed the many Thais out shopping showing the two Scrabble aces’ masterful knowledge of the English language and game tactics.

This was the second game of a two game final for the title. In the first game Jakkrit lost by 99 points and knew he had a battle on his hands to overcome the deficit.

Said Jakkrit – a doctor who fits prosthetic limbs for a living: “I got SIGNING as my first seven letter bingo (word with a 50 point bonus) followed by OUTSIDES and then CARDIOS”.

CARDIOS is not a word in the American dictionary used in the event but Charnwit was not sure and would have missed a turn had he challenged and been incorrect. So he let it go. (CARDIOS is an acceptable word in the international lexicon that both men have studied, hence the confusion).

Charnwit then played AEDILES but Jakkrit responded with WATERMEN. At the end of the game Charnwit would have won by playing HURTLE but instead he opted for EH and Jakkrit was able to secure the win by a mere 3 points overall with a 494 – 392 win in the second game.

Some two thousand Thai school children took part in student divisions at the two day event at the shopping center’s hall and walkways. It was the first of the year’s big Scrabble events while the tour moves to Central in Khon Kaen next weekend.

English language Scrabble is played to a very high standard by both students and professional players in Thailand and is considered one of the country's success stories in inspiring Thai youth.

yeah, both of these things, medical doctors and Scrabble, involve memorization.

if they had any language capacity at all, we could just as easily be reading that a genetically regenerated Homo neanderthalensis in his or her bare feet, and wearing a thong, had won the contest.

next story?  a spelling bee.

A genetically regenerated Homo neanderthalensis no less. Takes one to know one I suppose.

By the way, I know Jakkrit and he is excellent in English and an inspiration to thousands in Thailand.
