Less checkpoints and handheld cameras as Bangkok police aim to stop public catching them out on social media

BANGKOK: -- Police in Bangkok are set to use hand held cameras in an effort to catch more motorists breaking traffic regulations.

And a top brass traffic cop has said there will be less checkpoints in future.

And, significantly, they hope the new moves will to see an end to the public posting conflicts on social media as it is embarrassing the force, reports Daily News.

Eighty eight stations in the capital will be arming themselves with quality cameras so that they can catch the public in the act of going through red lights or riding on the footpaths.

Station chiefs will have the power to order the location of the officers with the cameras. They could be mobile patrols or static.

Announcing the new measures Jiraphat Phoomijit deputy chief of the met's traffic division said that it will lead to more fines and a more efficient force.

He has ordered each of 88 city wide stations to get quality cameras that will be capable of getting clear pictures including license numbers. They must record the day, time and location too, he said.

The pictures will be processed at stations and tickets issued via the post. This will lead to more fines being paid and more expedience, he said.

Referring to motorcycles he indicated they will concentrate on vehicles going in the wrong direction, ones on the footpath, illegal use of expressways and lack of helmets. For cars the police may decide to focus on illegal overtaking or pushing in at bridges.

It will be up to each station to identify the places in their jurisdiction where there are the most traffic offences being committed.

On the subject of police checkpoints Jiraphat said that there should be less and they should be set up "every other day" at most. More than one should not be set up on the same road and there should not be two in the same area.

The changes are in readiness for what is known as Order 44 to deal with traffic problems.

Jiraphat also commented on the number of conflicts recently with members of the public who had posted video on social media.

He hopes that the new cameras that the police will have will provide incontrovertible evidence that will put an end to or at least lessen these disputes that have been embarrassing for the police.

Here's a great idea, and very easy to implement.... do your job properly, be all the policeman

you should be, serve and protect, not only yourselves, but the public as well

and you'll have absolutely nothing to worry about social media catching you

and your .shenanigans....

I stopped reading when he said "And, significantly, they hope the new moves will to see an end to the public posting conflicts on social media as it is embarrassing the force"

wasn't going to comment further but I will say this -

So his brainwave idea is to stop interacting with the public because they are incapable of doing it in a professional manner and constantly embarrass themselves because the public are now armed with smartphones and dash cams that can record the events and publish/expose them easily online for all to see.

Maybe it might be an idea to start training the police so they act in a professional manner don't embarrass themselves

Also, so they no longer  going to check for Licence. Road Tax, insurance, vehicle defects like badly warn tyres, drunk drivers etc which can only be done by interaction

What really bothers me is that these police officers passed an entrance exam and then went through intensive training ............................ really, maybe you need to take a long hard look at that because it ain't working

Now I understand motorcyclists getting targeted for the chaos they are capable of but lack of helmets by so many is a disgrace of the senior members of society who are leading by poor example.

The police are also struggling to find reasons to stop the deadly car drivers. We'll, about 90 percent of them are driving blind in the morning and evening with blacked out windows to facilitate their illegal facebooking, TV watching and minding the children that are climbing around the car. Non helmet wearing is harmless to others. Black windows encourage very rude behavior on the road with no loss of face.

I think this will lead to more embarrassment for them as the netizens fill their Facebook pages with photos of the BIB with no helmets and riding on the footpaths

Christ. They'll need a massive memory card! Just enforce the law. A blanket 500 baht fine would sort things out. I was caught on CCTV camera going over a flyover. A no no in this crazy place on a motorbike. I paid the and the country is richer not just one BIB.

To be fair, it is far more efficient to snap a photo than to pull someone over, give them a talking to, check their docs, take the 200B 'fine' and send them on their way. In that time you could have taken quite a few photos and/or selfies. Why do you think their are so many traffic cameras in other countries? More efficient and less costly than employing someone to do it. Although here it's clearly not going to work quite like that, not initially anyway.

Quite incredible that the senior officers don't recognise that the issue is the behaviour of the cops, not that somebody catches them at it! The issue with the police is and always has been negligence through lack of enforcement. Just too damned lazy. So who is going to stand with a camera for hours on end? Maybe a few for a little while, but back to normal after a month or so. I'd love to see results of the average IQ of the police force.

we know about the entrance exam, how long has this operation been going on for may be the answer for why the RTP go about the policing way they do, if this exam scam has been going on for years

Another B.I.B. brainwave that ain't going to work.

They was using this method in Singapore in 1980 when I lived there and it worked quite well. But then again we are talking about two different intelligence of police training.

The aim should be to make the roads more safe and have more bad drivers face the financial consequences and to collect more money to improve the roads and dangerous crossings.nothing to do about social media!

Education is the key.

The problem is, how do you educated millions of angry morons?

I think by sending them frequent traffic fines in the mail trust me at some point they will understand.in Europe rarely people overspeed in comparison with 10 years ago.to many cameras in europe speeding is just not worth it anymore.

Why is everybody so negative.Camera is good cannot argue with a photo just should of happen 20 years ago Need more mounted camera on traffic lights and speed camera on highways and main roads. Police will need to go knocking on doors to collect fines so more police seem in public so could be good thing.

Getting a guilt complex I guess. I guess a big camera order will be going out to China for expensive Nikons that will disappear along with the monitoring of the roadways. Its becoming just to taxing I guess. More than likely the Nikons will be handed out as BIB consulation prizes for doing goodness knows what.

more cops on the roads in unmarked cars, more cops on the roads late at night, more speed cameras on the highways, more enforcement of the rules of the road, more automated fining system to avoid corrupt roadside collections, more efficient training of cops, more X, Y and Z.

Let's face it the system, as it stands is *&^%%* up and they don't have the knowledge to deal with it in a truly productive way.

Every time one of the big boys come up with stupid ideas, the more you are going to be on social media. Do your work properly and don't call on the bib. Did you know the meaning of the word bib? Quote:  A napkin tied under the chin of a child while eating: end Quote.

It, the bibs, are there to catch the dribble from above.

Social media catch and show, more bad habits and more pre-accidents for everyone world-wide to see, than the bib hope to catch in 1000 years.
