Garmin Nuvi 57LM

Featured Replies

I am looking at buying  Garmin Nuvi 57LM Sat Nav / Navigator directly from a Garmin authorised dealer in Thailand; does anyone have experience using this unit in Thailand ?

  • How accurate the mapping is ?
  • Thai and UK English inputs ?
  • Voice guidance language quality ?

I also looked at using "Garmin Thailand" on my iPhone 6 but that still relies on have a quality mobile phone signal 3G / 4G and an unlimited or very high data package to be affective.

Thank you in advance for your help. . . . . .

I have a Nuvi 40, which is several versions earlier than the 57LM (and didn't come with lifetime updates) and it's great.  I won't leave my neighborhood without it on my dashboard.  The audible language is excellent, accuracy and directions- excellent, too.

For walking around, I use a smartphone.  For driving, I use a dedicated GPS.  It's a one trick pony, but it's very good at that trick- and doesn't get distracted by things like phone calls, music, updates, screen timeouts, etc.

One caveat- have the vendor program it in English for you in the shop.  Several people have posted about their difficulties changing it on their own.

I have bought one Garmin 57 LM two days ago (  from Lazada ), and today I did my first trip with my scooter ( I put it in front of me, inside a transparent pochette special for motorbikes ) , before I had a Garmin 200, and I am very satisfied; it receives the satellites signal very fast, a few seconds , I have downloaded voices in French, my language,  and the voice announces the  bends about 500 meters in advance when they are far away, and , at the last moment, a second time

the manual is in Thai but you can download one in English ( Google " Garmin 57 LM English manual  " ), and , compared to the Nuvi 200 , battery lasts much longer

I did my trip in the country side, not in a city , it was sometimes a very winding  road  and the GPS followed very well the path , so I can say that for me it is a very good GPS ( and not expensive, 4190 bahts )

I forgot to say that changing language and voice is very easy , just go to settings ( the cross right corner in the first page,)  then scroll to the picture with lips, click and you have keyboard, language

I'm curious about the pochette. Can you post a picture and some information on where you got it?

Thanks

Here is the link  http://www.soeasyrider.fr/?sl=en

you can also type " soeasyrider " in Youtube, and there are several videos about what I call " pochette "  ( I don't know the English name )

I have an iPhone 4S which I still use for navigation and I am particularly pleased with the suggested rerouting due to traffic conditions. However it is on its last legs and I won't be buying a new iPhone at these prices. I tried using an Android last week and it sent me crazy, for some reason it kept demanding I download the Google navigation app when I already have it, and insisting that I download Lazada, which I also already have.

As soon as the iPhone conks out, I will be buying a Garmin that's for sure. (Probably from Lazada!).

You are right, both are good ! I  bought mine from Lazada, I live in the country side, and two days later, they brought it to my door ( transport free because it's a small item ), but buy it and pay on the arrival , you will not lose money with change currency , I mean don't buy with a credit card, buy cash

Lazada is good, today they brought to my door an AC/UNIT

Can you input geographic co-ordinates into the Garmin 57?

From what other people have told me you can't input GPS coordinates into the Garmin 57LM it's by address or setting a waypoint. . . . .

I have a Nuvi 55 which was the least expensive device available. Under 4,000 baht. If you tap "where to" then "categories", scroll down and you will see coordinates. It is quite easy to input the coordinates. I also have a very old unit, Nuvi 855 that works basically the same way but a little easier. "where to" then scroll down and you will see coordinates, just one less step. The Garmin is MUCH better than my Android phone or the in dash GPS in my Isuzu pickup.

Gary A is right, same procedure with Garmin 57
