BANGKOK, 23January 2017 (NNT) – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) expects the country to welcome 825,000 foreign tourists during Chinese New Year festivities, generating more than 19 billion baht in revenue.

TAT Governor Yuthasak Supasorn said 2017’s Chinese New Year celebrations will mark Thailand and China’s 42nd anniversary of diplomatic relations as well as the 42nd anniversary of cultural cooperation between the TAT and the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China.

Yuthasak said high-ranking officials from China will be taking part in Chinese New Year activities in Thailand. Thailand is among the five countries Chinese officials will be visiting during the Spring Festival this year. Outside of China, Thailand is believed to be the biggest host of the occasion.

Between January 27th and February 2nd which is when the festival will be celebrated, the TAT governor said Thailand will be visited by at least 825,000 travelers and holiday goers from overseas especially Chinese-speaking countries, adding that Thailand is likely to take in 19.1 billion baht in tourism revenue during the period, which would be an increase of 10% compared to last year’s figure.

TAT certainly deserve both the optimism and energizer awards for not giving up despite every indication of a failing tourist industry in favour of neighbouring countries.

They have also probably funded the high ranking Chinese delegation...so they expect them to bring 825k mates.

And I "expect" to win the 400 million dollar Power Ball Jackpot. Looks like neither of us is going meet our expectations.

Just last week TAT told all Thais to smile and the tourists will come flocking back and it seems the message has got out.

Just like the big smiles on the Thai police when they apprehend one of the many felons who snatch handbags from tourists.

Seems like there will be plenty of Chinese handbags to choose from soon. I expect there will be a lot of snatching going on over the celebration period.

Okay lets do the sums. TAT is aiming for 32 million tourist this year this is 615 000 tourist per week. Chinese new year stretches over 2 weeks, thus we should have 1,23 million tourist coming into the country over this period, not 825 000. Somebody's calculator is lying again or its faulty.

And if 825000 spend 19 billion, that is 23030 Bht each. I doubt it.

You would be correct if the visitors were trained to spread their arrivals evenly throughout the year.

However, it seems they choose to prefer some months over others (if TAT's arrival statistics for 2016 are to be believed, they had 32,588,303 foreign visitors - http://tourism2.tourism.go.th/home/listcontent/11/221/276).

Chinese New Year in 2016 was 8 February, and Chinese visitors (and total visitors) peaked that month.

Which confirm my case. If the arrivals peak at Chinese new year time then the arrivals must be more than the 825 k to enable TAT to reach their target of 32 million.

In Trump's America, we're getting "alternate facts" from the new administration.

TAT mastered the concept of "alternate facts" before it was a thing.

With their track record, there is no reason to believe anything out of them.

Who cares? This is Thailand. It is what it is.

TAT SHAT.as I like to call it.we all know the figures will be down but who cares.whatever comes out of their mouths will be a load bs.i used to have pals from my city in the uk come over all the time.20+ the last 2 Christmas holidays.just 2 this year and none until next Christmas.the 20+ party all went to northern Cyprus and ain't coming back,I didn't ask them but I think they like it here but it's a long haul and not cheap.thailand has been well promoted of a dangerous place all over the media with deaths, accidents, thefts, dodgy police and rip offs.also the weather this year has put the boot in.imagine spending 3 weeks of your Xmas holidays floating down the street of samui in a rubber ring.
