TPP exit by US will not affect Thailand: Commerce minister

BANGKOK, 23 January 2017 (NNT) – The possibility of the United States deciding to exit from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) will not affect Thailand but will provide the opportunity for this country to push forward the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), commented Commerce Minister Apiradi Tantraporn.

She said such decisions made by new US President Donald Trump will not affect Thailand which is not a TPP member but will give the opportunity for Thailand to push forward the ASEAN+6 or RCEP agenda later this year.

The commerce minister said it is unlikely for the United States to withdraw foreign investments, particularly in the ASEAN region and Thailand, as the United States cannot manufacture some products.

She added that the US internal economic stimulus will likely improve the superpower’s economy which will in turn positively affect other countries, including Thailand which currently has a 10 percent volume in total foreign trade with the United States.

She said the export of Thai goods to the US is likely to increase while the overall Thai export industry is expected to grow by three percent this year.

To which the Tourism Minister will add, "Thai tourism will now increase to record levels". :partytime2: :cheesy:

"....Thai export industry is expected to grow by three percent this year".

What absolute garbage. More Alice in Wonderland stuff.

These people (Commerce Minister Apiradi Tantraporn) are expected to put out this dribble to impress the big boss.

The fact is Thai exports have been on a downward spiral  for about two years. November exports got a boost because the Australian mining company (which PM Prayuth closed down using Article 44) sold up all their existing on-site gold stocks and exported it before the military could lay claim to it.

Exports are well and truly in decline and no matter how much spruiking the PM's bootlickers go on with it is sure to continue on that downward path until democracy returns.

Countries run by military juntas have little respect among international trading partners.

Thailand should look to doing trade deals with their North Korean comrades.

Its amazing how nothing ever affects Thailand negatively. The world can learn from this country. Also I read recently that Thai will become a world wide language soon. And don't forget happiness has been returned to its citizens.

The country never was part of TPP so how  could it have had an effect on the country when Trump withdrew from it? Another clueless article about nothing giving a man thats out of his confort zone media coverage that he doesnt deserve. Why not rather tell us how the government have already made contact with the new administration regarding a new bilateral trade agreement. That would have been news and would have indicated intellectual capacity to run the country.

Trump is very serious about free trade.  I don't think the Thai government has a full grasp on that concept.

The TPP had nothing to do with free trade. It was all about strengthening and adding to trading restrictions and establishing a new extra-legal "conflict resolution mechanism" to allow huge international corporations to more easily plunder small countries. The Governor of the Bank of Thailand, in an astonishing editorial, pointed out that secret parts of the agreement were not in Thailand's interest, so even though President Obama was trying to sell it, Thailand chose not to get involved. Nobody knows yet what, if anything, President Trump is serious about.

Remember that Trump makes decisions based on unfiltered impressions and hearsay. All Thailand needs is one person close to Trump (barber, butler, chauffeur) to say something negative about Thailand, and sanctions on US imports may fly.

On the other hand Somkid recommended Thailand join TPP.

My point wasn't about TPP.

Thailand won't become a Center for 'bilateral' trade agreements, anytime soon.

All they have to trade is nuclear secrets and slave labor.

Technically your right. Physically well your right to.

Could the recent announcement re strengthening the abolishing of VPNs by China be a coincidence? Are the Chinese feverishly attempting to hide any devastating financial impact from their populace re this doing away with TPP, which will undoubtedly have an affect on China's exports and, I submit, Thailand's? Yay.

China was  not offered membership in TPP. Its Silk Road trade program competed with TPP. Now with the US out of TPP as the dominant trade partner, China's economic position in Asia improves.

And how. More countries available with their financial backs against the wall to put in bondage. China only does things that benefit China.

The reality is another. What is expected is not always what comes true after all the dreams on sweet and soft pillows. A little to much pillow talk here IMO.
That is going to make Thailand more unique than before. Now it´s the only country that is not going to be affected of that a small country like US break out of a big business group.
But ok! Sometimes fiction is actually more fun than reality. Bring out the beers and the barbecue. It´s Party time!

Wow, teflon Thailand strikes again!

China was purposely excluded from the TPP. In fact it was being sold as a weapon against China. I'm afraid I don't see how abandoning is going to change current trade patterns one way or the other. Japan, at least, is still pursuing it so it's not as if there's no competitor to the Chinese proposal.

The US Senate has to approve TPP before POTUS gets a chance to veto it. Donald Trump isn't going to veto TPP because the Senate will not pass it. TPP is one more free trade agreement that would screw the American working people, good that it is stopped now.
