BANGKOK: -- Eighty-five people have died and four others are still missing in flooding in southern provinces since early December, according to the Public Disasters Prevention and Mitigation Department.

 

The department chief Mr Chatchai Promlert said on Monday that more than 1.7 million people and over 580,000 houses in 12 southern provinces have been affected by floods which also damaged more than 2,300 schools and 25 government offices.

 

Although flooding situation has eased in Ranong, Krabi, Trang, Chumporn and Prachuab Khiri Khan, seven other provinces namely Nakhon Si Thammarat, Surat Thani,l Phatthalung, Yala, Songkhla, Pattani and Narathiwat remains flooded.

 

Heavy rains are anticipated today until Wednesday in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat.

Meanwhile, people living downstream of 17 mid-sized reservoirs in southern provinces have been warned to watch out for flooding from swollen canals due to sudden spillover of water from the overflowing reservoirs.
