Border land ‘rules flouted’

Featured Replies

Svay Rieng’s provincial governor has been urged to step in over allegations that border farmland was being rented to Vietnamese people in violation of government orders. Opposition CNRP provincial councilor Kong Mas has written to governor Men Vibol, saying Vietnamese people were planting rice at border post 189 and powerful people were renting more than 1,000 hectares of Cambodian land to Vietnamese.

The letter, sent on November 20, says Vietnamese nationals were planting rice at border post 189 in Dontey village, and Vietnamese authorities had banned Cambodians from planting rice there. Instead, they told Cambodians to plant more than 50 meters away.

The letter also said powerful people in Svay Rieng town rented the land to Vietnamese farmers on 1,047 hectares in two communes in Chantrea district. Mr. Mas said he sent the letter because he wanted the governor to publicly respond to villagers, especially those who had watched a video clip he posted on Facebook about Vietnamese people planting rice on Cambodian land.
