BANGKOK: -- A JAPANESE public prosecutor has pressed charges against a high-ranking Thai official from the Intellectual Property Department who was arrested for allegedly stealing three paintings worth 15,000 yen (Bt4,684) from a Kyoto hotel.

The case has been submitted for the court's consideration, the Foreign Affairs Ministry's Information Department director-general Sek Wannamethee said yesterday.

Although the official had not been officially identified, the only deputy director attending the January 20 to 25 meeting on intellectual property was Suphat Saquandeekul. He was also scheduled to deliver a lecture on the subject at a local university.

Doesnt Japan understand Thainess? He said he's sorry. He will pay for the paintings. No problem. Let him go.

Say what? That would set a terrible example and a terrible precedent? Oho! You think too much. Too serious.

Theft is infinitely more serious in Japan than in Thailand. Whole families lose their jobs because of one member's theft crime.

The Japanese are not going to let him off easily.

That's what everyone said about the police chief carrying a gun onboard the flight AND being in
possession of a gun in Japan without a license. Sorry folks, there's a certain level a person is in all countries (even 'perfect' 1st world Japan) where the law doesn't apply anymore for lesser crimes.

I was hoping Thailand had already used its favour card on that idiot police officer with ammunition. Me thinks you're right, and Thailand will do whatever it can to soften any charges, and Japan may well comply to a certain extent.

Welcome to the real world where who you are may not get you a get out of jail pass.

And he was scheduled to teach undergraduates...?

In what subject?

Japanese Art History?

Or "Thai Ethics". (a 30 second course, utilizing the shortest Thai book ever written)

The Thai policeman with the gun eventually got out; suspect this chap will too, after some squirming and extreme loss of face. Maybe he'll take up painting in jail?

Yes and the lesson was on "How the LOS government officials, can steal with impunity, and get away with it".

Just a very dumb crime! Talk about risking to loose more than you can win. Stealing worthless art with the motive of a japanese adult movie star. Did they find japanese sexy cartoon magazines in his suitcase too?

Nothin intellectual about this guy.

You would think that someone in this department of government would need to show that his moral compass is in order. That alone should get him fired from his position.

The world is pressuring Thailand to deal with copyright infringement so maybe with some international pressure Thailand will do the right thing and make an example of this idiot, or at least let Japan do it for them, or both. But.....TIT

"Wai and Sorry "doesn't cut it in

Japan, criminals must pay for

their crimes...

Intellectual property department? Rather ironic one would think. I wonder would it be fair that upon stealing the paintings that he gave the painter proprietary credit for his work.

Just amazing the vast differences of Asian culture. I look at South Korea where 100,000's of people hit the bricks demonstrating against Park. Just a few years they were under dictatorial rule by her father. There may be some hope yet for Thailand.

From today's The Nation:

"Sek said the official was released after Japanese prosecutors and police ruled it was a petty offence that |was not premeditated and had not caused damage to others because compensation was paid to the hotel. "

Theft under 5,000Baht. Pay back the money. No punishment. All is well.

Unheard of in Japan, unless there are other "negotiations" for this "VIP," to which we are not privy.
