Sweden shuts Yangon office, shifts to Bangkok

Sweden has permanently closed its diplomatic section office in Yangon, transferring all Myanmar‑related affairs to its embassy in Bangkok. The move marks another European withdrawal from Myanmar amid worsening political instability under military rule.

In a statement, Swedish authorities confirmed that political and official matters will now be managed remotely from Thailand. The closure follows Stockholm’s new aid strategy, which phases out bilateral development cooperation with Myanmar by June 2026 and redirects resources towards Ukraine, though emergency humanitarian support remains.

Human rights groups voiced concern, warning that the absence of a physical presence weakens the international community’s ability to document abuses and support pro‑democracy networks. “This decision represents both a financial and political blow,” Human Rights Myanmar said.

Sweden’s departure mirrors a broader trend. Finland shut its Yangon embassy in February, while Denmark and the Netherlands have announced plans to discontinue their resident missions. All are opting for regional oversight from neighbouring capitals.

The closure underscores the shrinking European footprint in Myanmar, reflecting both security challenges and shifting foreign policy priorities. For civil society groups, the loss of diplomatic outposts raises fears of reduced international engagement at a time of deepening repression.
