Prayut upbeat on peace talks after insurgent leader's death

Hospital workers in Yala province rush Friday to assist Chak Kraithong, an undercover police officer, after he was struck by a roadside bomb on his way home from work - one of the near-daily attacks authorities attributed to the separatists.

BANGKOK — Junta chairman Prayuth Chan-ocha told reporters Tuesday he has seen progress in an ongoing peace dialogue with separatists in the Deep South following the death of their “spiritual leader” last month.

Hopes of closer negotiations between the Thai state and insurgents were raised after Sapaeng Basoe, who commanded the most well-armed group in the region, died last month at 81. However, it is still unclear who will replace him and how the movement will be steered.

Prayut is conveying an illusion for public consumption (aka propaganda)

Gen. Aksara Kerdphol said last week, “Having fewer spiritual leaders as time goes by will result in an easier peace dialogue,”

He's sadly and irresponsibly wrong.

It has been the spiritual leadership that has kept the militancy largely in check for the sake of negotiations. Less spiritual leaders, the more the local militant leaders will pursue violence over peace talks. Rather, “If there’s progress and practical results, the military faction of the BRN may decide to join,” - Srisomphop Jitpiromsri, director of the Deep South Watch news agency.

Wishful thinking!  1507625.GIF

Damn, if they waited 81 years for better dialogue, they better hope the next one in line does not live to such an old age !

Pathetic, predictable, uninformed and ignorant.

And you're laughing at your own "joke".....using not one, but two emoticons.......all on your own.........in your lonely room.

Going nowhere........just like your comment.

Buddhism - the religion of peace?

Forced annexation of a peaceful Muslim kingdom

Forced assimulation of a peaceful Muslim population

12 Thai military coups since 1933

Thai military wounding and killing citizens/foreigners in extrajudicial actions

Thai military engaged in human trafficking

Buddhist monk led marches to overthrow an elected government with violence

Buddhist monks in Mayanmar attacking and killing Muslims

I'd cry rather than laugh.
