BANGKOK: -- Thai people travelling to Japan have been warned to take out medical insurance.

The advice comes from officials at the Thai embassy in Tokyo, reported Komchadluek.

This follows a case of a 27 year old Thai woman who unexpectedly suffered from heart problems while in the Japanese capital. Wanisa Jaijan from San Pa Thong, Chiang Mai has run up medical bills of 10 million yen or 3 million baht in less than two weeks.

Wanisa - or Nong Jupjip - was admitted to Tokyo Medical Hospital on January 20th after suffering a suspected heart attack.

The embassy said that all Thais travelling to Japan should take the precaution of having travel insurance.

The foreign ministry added that while assistance can be given to people while abroad this does not extend to paying hospital bills.

While in some cases the state can pay upfront this will come only after signed assurances are given that the monies can be and will be repaid to the state.

The message was clear: first and foremost Thai people need to take responsibility for themselves and not think that the state can simply step in to take care of matters, reported Komchadluek.

well there's a novel idea....could Thais teach the Farang from the Nanny State a few lessons?

And all travers to Thailand should do the same.  Nothing new here.  Move along.  But you know most people won't do it

My g/f went to Singapore with her aunt for a week to 10 days and I continuously harped on the fact that she should get medical coverage. Waste of time.

U certainly need insurance where ever you go not just Japan, there's an Australian stuck in an Thai Hospital owing $56,000 and not coming out until it's paid..............................................................:coffee1:

They should also remember that you cannot open packets of snacks or whatever, or drinks, in supermarkets or convenience stores etc., before you pay for them.

can you take out insurance against arrest?

I don't think travel insurance extends to kleptomania coverage.
