YALA: -- Steel cooking-gas cylinders weighing 15 kilograms or less have been banned in Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani and in the Chana, Na Thawi, Saba Yoi and Thepha districts of Songkhla province except with permission from the provincial energy office.

The Internal Security Operations Command Region 4’s Front Command said yesterday that people violating the ban would face a criminal charge which carries a penalty of up to two years in prison and/or a Bt40,000 fine.

The ban was issued by Fourth Army commander Lt-General Piyawat Nakwanich to prevent insurgents making use of the steel cylinders in bomb-making and to stop violence in the deep South.

Yeah I am sure that will help...

Will they not just make bigger bombs?

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

What about fertilizers, ammonia and other gases and  incendiary materials.. like gas and other fuels ? are you going to ban them all too?

So back to charcoal for cooking then that will be banned for using forest fuel and causing Global Warming both in production of it and use.

Not very well thought out,it will piss a lot of the population off,

who need the gas for daily cooking, the bombers will just go to another

province and buy a bottle there,AND what's going to happen to all

the banned gas cylinders, looks like you are going to need a license

to own a gas cylinder.

Are they going to issue magnifying glasses to allow people to "cook" food?

Whatever you do, don't teach them to fish with dynamite.

Now thousands of roadside food sellers will chop the rest jungle for fire wood. Tzzzzzzz

In 2015 ISOC initiated a gas cylinder exchange program to replace metal gas tanks available for sale at local stores or used by local residents at homes with the composite ones. By August 2016 ISOC claimed to have replaced 80% of the metal gas tanks, contributing to 12% - 31% declines in violence and deaths respectively since January compared to a similar period last year.

So either a lie or program failed?

Meaningful peace talks might work better.

Both. Like everything else.

With just one drop of gasoline in a container the size of a cup you can make a huge explosion.

Will they be expecting a queue of bombers handing in their gas canisters ?

Ah, no problem. They can all eat at McDonalds or KFC....not

Seriously, what are they thinking? I would say 95% of hot meals in Thailand are cooked with flames from gas-cylinders. Has anyone ever seen electro-stoves or ovens here? They are as rare as locked front-loader Washing-machines with hot water.

Another decision made without any thought how to enforce.

2 years in prison for having a gas bottle?  They will need to divide up the country into the, "have gas bottles" and the "have nots".

It must be nice for those who make these decisions, waking up each morning and looking at life through the mind of a simple ton. Everything must just make sense.

His family probably owns a few restaurants with a declining "plastic bag" take out service!

meanwhile have they yet managed to stop the local army bases and militia handing over their weapons to the insurgents ?

I do not condone the sarcastic comments on this timely and well targeted pre-emptive intervention to reduce violence, and to make acquisition of potential ordinance for would-be troublemakers more difficult.

Now youre spreading ideas, personally I thought they were talking about the pm when they mentioned gas  bottles or perhaps bags would be more appropriate

But you need to buy the wick seperate. So they must be safe.

Timely?

Pray tell to share your view on the timeliness of this edict.

These wee numbers are not as easy to conceal, I take it...

As a member of that group...

I can understand the thinking behind it; the smaller gas bottles are easier for the insurgents to transport and conceal.

The "normal" cooking gas cylinders are 15kg net of LPG. One assumes (hopes) that these will be exempt from the ban and it's only the smaller "barbecue" sizes that are outlawed.
